Posted 07/14/2010 at 11:10am | by J.R. Bookwalter There’s no doubt that Apple’s new iPhone 4-only FaceTime feature is great, and the company is letting everyone know about it with an avalanche of new television commercials. But whether you’re stuck on an older iPhone or you don’t have any iPhone 4-toting friends to video chat with, there are thankfully some free App Store alternatives to FaceTime--if you know where to look. Oh, and did we mention these are all free? fring The app that most closely resembles the functionality of FaceTime is fring. Developer fringland Ltd. was the first to bring one-way video calls to the iPhone in a previous version, allowing at least computer users with webcams to be seen on the handset. Thanks to an update last week, free two-way video calls have now been added to the mix, and they actually one-up FaceTime by allowing such calls over

One of most excruciatingly boring experiences of my life was waiting in line on June 29, 2007 for my first-generation iPhone. The day was clear and hot, and although I had my laptop with me, it quickly ran out of juice as we waited for the official opening of the store for iPhone sales at 5 PM. Some people appear to have infinite patience, but TUAW reader Cody is like me -- he gets bored easily. In an email, Cody said "I will be standing in the Best Buy line for well over 5 hours. Do you have any suggestions on ways to help time go by? I think it would be helpful if you compiled a list and posted it on TUAW!" Well, we're at your service, Cody! And hopefully, these ideas will keep hundreds of thousands of iPad owners-to-be from suffering from terminal boredom in the early morning hours

EnvIO Networks has just released the latest batch of usage statistics from its iPhone app Chorus. The app, which launched in November, acts as a social network for Apple's App Store. It lets users share what apps they're buying, as well as recommend purchases to others--two things Apple's own store does not offer. According to the company, Chorus users have invited an average of 75 friends. The numbers below are based on "tens of thousands of user interactions and download attempts" from the month of December.

The wait for live steaming video applications to land in the official App Store has come to an end. In what I still consider a surprising approval, Apple has allowed a new Ustream app into the App Store, and this one will allow those with an iPhone 3GS to stream live video. And on top of the approval, the app work with either a 3G or Wi-Fi connection. In addition to the Ustream app, we have also learned that Qik has submitted their own app and is currently waiting approval. Getting back to the currently approved app, which is called Ustream Live Broadcaster — this app will allow you to stream live video or record video and save it to your iPhone for a future upload. Additionally, Ustream users will also be able to easily make others aware they are live streaming with Twitter notifications. The video can be directly updated

With Ustream Live Broadcaster, you can share real-time video with the world. The race is over. Ustream Live Broadcaster is the first app that can stream live video from the iPhone to the Internet. It's free, and it works. Will society ever be the same? History may well record that Knocking Live, which debuted with some fanfare last week, was the iPhone's first video-streaming app. But only other iPhone users can watch the feeds; Ustream lets the world tune in. Indeed, in case you're unfamiliar with the service, Ustream allows anyone with a Webcam to broadcast live video to a private or public audience. In this case, the iPhone acts as the Webcam; all you need is a Wi-Fi or 3G connection. (If there's no connection available, you can record your video and upload it to the service later.) And speaking of 3G, the app works with both the iPhone 3G

We were all a bit surprised when Ustream's free Live Broadcasting iPhone app [iTunes Link] was approved by Apple and tossed into the App Store yesterday. After all, it wasn't that long ago that it seemed that no streaming video apps would ever be approved for the iPhone platform due to AT&T's reluctance to have their network overwhelmed by self-produced live vidcasts of emo guitar players "broadcasting" from their unheated rent-controlled flats. No sooner had the Ustream app magically appeared than we began to receive emails from Qik stating that they were submitting their streaming video app for approval. Qik currently has Qik for 3GS [Free, iTunes Link] in the app store, which allows recording and eventual uploading of video to their site, but not live video streaming. According to a blog post on the Qik site, the app has been resubmitted and the wait is on. Having a choice of

by Jay Hathaway on December 9, 2009 at 04:30 PM Ustream, the popular streaming web video service, has just won the race to bring live streaming video to the iPhone. There have been a few almost-there attempts. People got their hopes up about Qik, but its video uploads weren't live. Ustream launched an iPhone app, but it was a viewer, not a broadcaster. Then, an app called Knocking made 1-to-1 video streaming possible. None of these previous apps have actually been able to do one-to-many live broadcasting the way Ustream Live Broadcaster can. Ustream Live Broadcaster works over 3G or wifi, and it has a lot of the features Ustream web users are already familiar with. You can see the chat about your video, and share it over Facebook and Twitter. You can check out Ustream Live Broadcaster for free in the App Store.

So today Ustream announced there live video streaming app and we published a news article about it, but when I was playing around with the app today, I saw that ustream records what is on your phones screen not just what the camera is seeing. i.e. if you receive a text or set your phone to silent mode, the messages display on the live feed. So I got to thinking, what if I enabled Broadcaster to run in the background (which can only be done with jailbroken phones) The result is your phone can now have screen recording and opens possibilities for live tutorials, or if you just want to watch the same iTunes movie on your iPhone as your viewers (very choppy), you can do that too. One big setback though is that right now, ustream only offers streaming for what is on half of your iPhones screen so you

Posted 12/09/2009 at 7:33am | by J.R. Bookwalter Good news this month for iPhone users who like to stream video from their devices. First, Steve Jobs himself blessed the Knocking Live Video app for iPhone-to-iPhone streaming, and now Ustream has released a new app called Live Broadcaster to stream video from your camera to the web. Ustream has been available on the App Store for awhile, but was limited by Apple’s strict policy that users could only upload video to the web after you had finished filming it -- no live streaming. iPhone users with jailbroken devices were able to circumvent this limitation, but now Apple has fully blessed Ustream Live Broadcaster for everyone. For those unfamiliar with Ustream, it’s one of the leading live interactive broadcasting platforms, enabling anyone to quickly broadcast to a global audience of unlimited size. Easily stream live moments from your phone and share them with

Just released this morning, the new Ustream Live Broadcaster app (iTunes link) actually allows you to stream live video from your video-capable iPhone 3GS to the web, something which the recently released Qik app couldn’t (and still can’t) boast. It’s the first app to offer live streaming from Apple’s handset, and it even allows you to do so over both Wi-Fi and 3G connections. In order to use the app, you’ll need to sign up for a free Ustream account if you don’t already have one. Ustream will prompt you to do so, and then allow you to register right within the app, without having to even pop out to Safari to complete the process. As with any Ustream video, your live stream will be automatically recorded and stored on your Ustream account for later viewing. You can also notify your friends via Twitter that you’re starting a stream, and take

By Rene Ritchie, Wednesday, Dec 9, 2009 | UPDATE: Yes, Ustream Live Broadcast is iPhone 3G compatible, and you can use it to record video from the iPhone 3G (no Jailbreak for Cycorder required!). If you’re trying it out on a 3G, let us know how it works for you! ORIGINAL: Ustream Live Broadcaster [Free - iTunes link] for iPhone has arrived, enabling users to point their iPhone cameras and instantly share whatever they’re looking at with internet viewers everywhere (terms of service appropriate, thankfully). It’s been a long, slow road getting live video up-streaming onto the iPhone, with Ustream in specific releasing a limited viewer-only app first, then a record-now-upload-later app. Does this mean the gates are open for yet another previously unavailable category? We’ll see. And while we’re happy with video, we’re still waiting for VoIP over 3G as well. Meanwhile, we’re bracing ourselves for the flood of “Come

Services like Ustream and Qik have long offered the promise of live streaming video from your mobile phone to the web — except if you had an iPhone. For those devices, that was only possible if you jailbroke your phone. Not anymore. The Ustream Live Broadcaster has just gone live in the App Store tonight and yes, it allows you to stream live video from the iPhone to the web. And yes, it even works over a 3G connection. And yes, it’s awesome. While one of the key features of the iPhone 3GS was video recording capabilities, that was limited to recordings that were captured on your device and could be uploaded to the web after they were done recording. With the Ustream Live Broadcaster, you can easily record videos right to the web, and allow others to watch them as they’re being recorded. These videos can also be archived so

This is an amzing app that does exactly what it says. I was pleasantly surprised at how easy it actually was. The only thing is I started with a full battery, played around with the app for about 10 or 15 minutes, and I'm already down to 70%. Honestly though, considering im live broadcasting to the Internet from a freaking cell phone, I guess that isn't so bad!

Glad to see the ability to stream from an iPhone! Quality is good. Like the ability to mute the audio. Only downside... Battery life is much shorter when streaming. Phone also gets warm (must be processor heavy). If that gets fixed I would give it 5 stars.
