Upon registration, you will create a personal Undercover account at http://www.retrievemyiphone.com. Every time the Undercover application is launched, the phone's location and IP information is stored in your account. You can then login to your account to track the device.
If your iPhone is lost, you can set a message that will be displayed to the finder when he launches Undercover. In the meantime, Undercover will transmit your phone's location.
If your iPhone is stolen, Undercover will pretend to be a game. This will encourage the thief to wait a few seconds for the game to load, enabling Undercover to get accurate location information. This location information is then added to your account and transmitted to the police station where you reported the theft.
Make sure to install the free 'Found' application. It functions as a honeypot app by transmitting the phone's location to your Undercover account. Even if the thief removes Undercover from your iPhone, Found will still be able to transmit the device's location.

Posted 12/02/2011 at 8:27am | by Adam Berenstain As important as it is to back up your data, software is only half the story when it comes to digital disasters. Hardware can go bad, or even get stolen, and there’s no way to keep a backup of a shiny new MacBook Pro. Or is there? All new or refurbished Macs, iPhones, iPods, and iPads come with 90 days of free technical support and a one-year warranty, but an AppleCare plan extends that to three years for Macs and two years for iOS devices. Plans range from $59 to $249, and the out-of-warranty cost of a single repair can make that investment worthwhile overnight. But don’t feel rushed to decide if AppleCare is right for you. Your device is eligible for the service until the end of its original warranty. Prey’s web control panel can map your Mac for free. When thieves

Orbicule — makers of apps like Undercover [App Store] — has just released a beautiful, innovative new alarm clock app called Melatonin. Melatonin [App Store, $0.99] is different from most other alarm apps because it helps you to wake up gradually, instead of jolting you awake with an annoying tone. The app does this by gradually increasing “sunlight,” causing your body to stop producing melatonin. After the “sun” comes up, Melatonin will play peaceful nature sounds to wake you up. The result is an easier time waking up and a better feeling in the morning. The app also aims to provide the same smooth transition into sleep; a sleep timer can play natural sounds or iPod music while the sun sets and the lights fade out. I haven’t tested Melatonin yet, so I can’t say how well it works. What I can say is that it’s got adorable little animals and

What's worse than a lost or stolen iPhone? Uh, hello? Nothing! That's why Apple invented Find My iPhone--and charges $99 per year for it as part of the MobileMe service. If you're not willing to spend that much but want some kind of insurance against an iPhone that goes missing, check out Orbicule's Undercover. This $4.99 app covertly transmits your phone's location and IP information to your browser-based Undercover account (free), thus allowing you to bust in on the thief and, guns blazing, take back your precious. By which I mean, of course, work with local authorities to recover your iPhone in a safe and law-abiding fashion. Of course. You can learn a lot more in the above video. However, there are a couple caveats that aren't mentioned. For one thing, your iPhone won't transmit its location unless the finder/thief runs the Undercover app or its companion Found app, or taps

Not everyone can afford MobileMe, and some of us simply don’t need all of the added features and storage space that it has to offer for the $99 price tag, but we all want to be able to track our expensive mobile device in case it is lost or stolen. So what are we to do? Well, there may be some hope. Orbicule recently updated their iPhone and iPod touch tracking app Undercover with the ability to send Push Notificaitons, making it much more worthy of a purchase. Undercover has always been able to track your iPhone’s location as long as the app is open, but the problem has always been making a thief actually launch the app. Now, in Undercover v1.5, you can at least try to trick a thief into opening the app via a well-worded Push Notification. Here’s how it works. When you first download Undercover, you will be

3 months+ and still no push or updates!

I use Undercover for my MacBook and have peace of mind while it on is all my Macs. I was excited for the iPhone app and now I am disappointed. I do not think the thief would be tricked into entering this app as it says Undercover and does not look inviting or like a game at all! It wouldn't be the first app I entered if I came across an iPhone. The 3.0 update has been out for over a week already and there is no update yet. I have MobileMe and have tried the "Find My iPhone" feature and it is very impressive! It utilizes the Push services for the 3.0 update and tracks your iPhone down with the ability to display messages on it. Orbicule states that it would integrate Undercover for iPhone into many games and apps but I seriously doubt that now. It's been 3 months already and still no update. What gives? I had hope for this app but until it is updated, it gets 1 star!

Hopefully this app will never be needed. In the mean time at least I can use it to tag geographic spots I want to remember. I have been enjoying the big brother app on my Mac for several years now, and only had to use it once when Apple claimed to have lost my laptop while in repair. Lets just say that it was found.

I hope I never lose my phone (or laptop)
I hope that if I do, Orbicule's apps can recover them.

I have installed the app and created an account on immediately I was seeing my phones location update on my computer (only once the app is opened) on the company site they say they are trying to sneak the technology into other 3rd party apps which I think will make this app all the better.
A great app that will only get better!

I have Undercover for Mac for several years now and I am impressed how the developers keep improving this great app. It is good to see that they pursued the same high quality standards for this brand new iPhone version. They didn't just port the Mac version to the iPhone, instead they created a totally new product (and accompanying website) specifically designed for Apple's mobile devices. Both the app and the website work flawlessly and are easy to use. Of course, the app has its limitations: a thief has to open the app in order to track the phone and you cannot prevent a thief deleting the app. But I guess you cannot blame the Orbicule developers for that. Apple does not allow 3rd party apps to run in the background or use push notifications. Therefore I am sure this app will only get better with the release of iPhone OS 3.0. Orbicule never charges current users for updates of their software so there is no reason to wait. I highly recommend this great app!
Can't wait for PUSH/Background Servises

Hopefully when 3.0 rolls out they can work on having it work in the background and have some way of preventing would be thieves from just •Deleting• the app or better yet disable location services under setting.
Some Push notification would be good too!
Good from far, but far from good.

Orbicule as a great reputation for theft recovery on OS X. And now they are moving to the iPhone OS...awesome; however a few hurdles stand in their way from making this a stellar app. The biggest one I see is the fact that a "thief" has to initiate the location part of the recovery process. I'm sure future updates into the 3.XX software will put this app back where it belongs.. at the top. Until then $4.99 is not a bad, assuming you get a stupid thief to launch the software.

I had undercover installed an working on my phone... Got three position updates just fine. Then I had to do a phone swap with Apple due to a H/W problem. I reinstalled undercover, named my phone the same, no position updates. I opened and quit the app for a day. Nothing. I tried removing undercover, reinstalling as a different phone to same account. It would never show up. No registration email either. I just removed and reinstalled again, this time I tired to setup a new undercover account (different email address). It says its active, says email was sent. NOTHING. I'm in touch with their support but their instructions were to quit and restart the app as if I have not tried that already. I'll update my review if/when I get undercover working again. At this point I think their server is having an issue. No registration emails etc...

Like probably most, I have had undercover for the mac for years. While I've never had to use their services, what the software can do is amazing and well thought out. I am so excited about the iphone software, because with this company's track record, their "version 1" will be grade-A software.
Great Company

I've purchased undercover on my mac, and I know how hard the developers work to keep it updated. I know this will be an even better app when iPhone 3.0 rolls out. Thanks guys.

This app is clever and well developed. The fact that it will only display the game splash screen when registered as stolen on the website is a nice touch. Clearly a lot of time and effort was put into this app. Furthermore, the fact that they added a "lost" splash screen is even nicer. I love that you can customize the lost screen to read whatever is desired. Furthermore, the fact that you are able to link to a police report in the "register as stolen" on the website is a great feature.
Great

Has some limitations now, but will be better as the developer makes improvements and with iPhone OS 3.0 .
Neat now. Could be great with iPhone 3.0

At this point you are trying to trick a thief into opening this app. So, put the app on your primary home screen just above the fab four dock apps. Or if you're at high risk of theft, put it in your dock so that it's enticing no matter what homescreen the thief views. Hopefully, iPhone 3.0 will improve this app. If stolen, the developer could send a push notification alert, which once clicked by the thief could send location data to the cloud. Kudos to the developer for working within iPhone 2.0 constraints to deliver a potentially invaluable app @ $5.
I'm on the fence...

A review I read, that led me to buy this app, led me to believe that this app "tricked" someone who has your phone into opening the app because it looks like a game. Maybe it's just me, but the app neither looks like a game, or has you play a fake game while it phones home. Furthermore, a shady figure that looks like a detective with a HAL like button/badge on his lapel AND the fact the name underneath says "Undercover" would probably indicate to me that this app is either going to phone home or try to locate itself, etc... In other words... If I had a stolen phone, this icon would be the LAST one I'd open.
