When Cerulean Studio made an alpha version of its Trillian software available for the Mac in early 2010, I wasn't very impressed. There were no buddy icons, the product didn't resemble the images released for it, there was no group chat support, a good many of the options didn't work, therer were no chat logs and more. At the time, I recommended sticking with Adium or Pidgin. I'm very pleased to say that nearly two years later, Trillian has developed into a solid text-based instant messaging client for the Mac. Trillian is available as a free download in the Mac App Store now, and it has gone through a vast number of improvements. While there's still not as many features as Adium, it's a solid client. Trillian, a multi-client messaging app for iPhone, has gone freemium. You can download Trillian for from the App Store for $0.00 and can add as many accounts to it as you’d like, so long as you’re all right with the AdMob at the bottom of the screen. If not, then you’ll have to fork over $1/month or $12/year to kill ads across all platforms (PC, Mac, etc.). I want to like Trillian, but a subscription price that only blocks ads and supports an online chat history seems a bit steep. There are plenty of cheaper instant messaging apps to choose from on the iPhone, and the free Adium app takes care of all of my IM needs on the Mac, so my first reaction to Trillian’s price isn’t a terribly positive one. Neowin.net has posted screen shots of the upcoming Windows Live Messenger for iPhone. According to Neowin's sources, Windows Live Messenger for iPhone will officially be previewed by Microsoft later today, but will not ship its public beta until June, with a limited private beta expected in May. Features gleaned from the screen shots include photo sharing, chat and a social stream for users. Of course, MSN Messenger has been supported on the iPhone since the unveiling of the app store via thrid party apps. I had a couple of minor issues with the 1.0 release, including a lack of landscape mode and making it too much of a pain to close a chat. Well, Trillian has fixed both of those issues, and much, MUCH more in the new version 1.1. Trillian now supports Facebook Chat, allows you to stay signed in for up to 7 days, and includes a bunch of other tiny improvements that I can't help but appreciate. Trillian IM is finally available to iPhone users. It took a few months, but finally, Trillian IM is available to iPhone and iPod Touch users through Apple's App Store. The application costs $4.99. Cerulean Studios, the company that created Trillian, said that Trillian for iPhone sports several features users will already find on the company's desktop software. The app displays contacts, grouped and sorted by their respective categories. Users can also view multiple chat windows in a tabbed display. There are two arrivals in the App Store of note. First, after a three month wait, the multiservice IM client Trillian is now available in the App Store [iTunes link] for iPhone and iPod touch.
