The Weather Channel app for iPhone gets major redesign
Mini_discussion_bubble IntoMobile - Posted Thu, 17 May 2012 20:32:59 UTC +00:00
The free Weather Channel iPhone and iPod touch app just got its first major redesign since launching in 2008. It’s gotten several feature and design improvements over the years, but the app is taking a leap forward in looks and function with today’s version 5.0 update. Launching the app reveals the standard splash screen followed by the entirely new experience. The first thing you’ll probably notice is the current temperature because it’s gigantic. You can swipe left and right if you have more than one location saved to view the different weather conditions. The scenic background changes according to the weather outside — if it’s sunny outside, you’ll see a bright sky, and if it’s raining, you’ll see rain, etc. An expandable plus button will also display advanced details like wind, humidity, UV index, sunrise, sunset, and more. The bottom toggle for current conditions, hourly forecast, 36-hour forecast, and 10-day forecast Read More
The Weather Channel Beautifies And Socializes Its iPhone App
Mini_discussion_bubble MobileCrunch - Posted Thu, 17 May 2012 12:00:16 UTC +00:00
In an effort to streamline its digital offerings, The Weather Channel has today announced that its popular iPhone app has undergone a major redesign. It started with the launch of the iPad app, and just a few weeks ago The Weather Channel followed suit on the web. But the iPhone marks a major portal between TWC and its consumers, in that mobile and weather undoubtedly go hand in hand. The redesign reminds me a bit of HTC’s Sense 3, with the home screen offering up a weather-themed background based on the weather outside. The user interface seems much more navigable, but the features themselves are getting a bump as well. The revamp streamlines the TWC app in a big way, in that you can have as much or as little weather as you’d like when you hop in the app. You’ll obviously get automatic weather updates, but the ability to save Read More

Best apps for tracking Hurricane Irene
Mini_discussion_bubble TUAW - The Unofficial Apple Weblog - Posted Sun, 28 Aug 2011 00:30:00 UTC +00:00
If you're in the path of Hurricane Irene and you haven't gone through the App Store already looking for the best sources of info on the storm, there are others who have done it for you. Information Week, Appolicious, and MSNBC's Technolog have all made lists of apps for various flavors of smartphones. Virtually all the lists of apps include the free Weather Channel App for iOS, Android, Windows Phone 7, and Blackberry*. The application description doesn't clearly state if the free app (there's a paid version) has push notification for weather alerts, but the $3.99 Weather Channel Max app does include them. Aside from TWC's contributions, there's also the paid Hurricane for iPhone or Hurricane HD for iPad which shows up in multiple lists of suggested apps. You may want to try searching for an app for a TV station in your area; a lot of them have notifications for Read More

App Smart Extra: A Weather App That Works
Mini_discussion_bubble NYTimes Gadgetwise Blog - Posted Fri, 20 May 2011 23:26:53 UTC +00:00
In a February column on weather apps, I complained about the substandard quality of most in the category. As mentioned in this week’s App Smart column, though, things got considerably better with the debut of MyWeather, which now sits atop my list of best weather apps and is available for Android and iOS devices. Most of its competitors are either easy to use but short on features (like Outside, for instance), or they include more features but are harder to use (like The Weather Channel). MyWeather is free, it’s filled with good features and it’s easy to use. The app shows you weather information about your particular neighborhood or block, not just your town or ZIP code. That level of specificity may be helpful in big towns, or those with varied geography. If you happen to be traveling internationally, the app can track weather anywhere on the globe — although given Read More
Ten Things You Must Equip Your iPhone With for an Adventure Holiday
Mini_discussion_bubble iPhoneFreak - Posted Thu, 07 Apr 2011 00:42:07 UTC +00:00
There was a time when taking an electronic device with you on an adventure holiday would have been seen as sacrilege, as how would it be an adventure if you had that level of assistance?  Thankfully, we think things have changed, and your smartphone is seen as not only an essential safety tool, but something which can enhance your adventure too! If you’re planning an adventure this year, here are ten hints and tips about what to equip your iPhone with before you go. 1.  A Really Tough Case. If you’re going to be using your iPhone 4 in harsh environments, it’s going to need to be well protected.  There are several super-tough cases available for the iPhone, and we’ve previously reviewed the Ballistic HC for the iPhone 4 and the Otterbox for the 3G, and both are seriously hard wearing, sealed units able to withstand proper shocks. 2.  An Extended Read More

Weathericon App Subtly Reminds You That You’re Freezing Every Time You Glance at Lockscreen
Mini_discussion_bubble iPhone Download Blog - Posted Thu, 07 Oct 2010 12:00:36 UTC +00:00
One of the better jailbreak apps is WeatherIcon, available in Cydia. This app allows two things: a temperature display in the status bar, and live updates/changes to your designated weather app icon (Apple’s native weather app, The Weather Channel, Weatherbug, etc…) that reflect current weather conditions. This way you can remember it’s a dapper -14 degrees out without even unlocking your phone. This is a clean and simple app. The temperature display in the status bar is unobtrusive (though there is an option to include a small image of current weather that takes up a little more space) and the various icon graphics for current weather are hi-res for iPhone 4 and well, accurate. Is it raining outside? Why yes, my iPhone weather icon tells me it is! There’s also some cool tweaks such as: This is not a new app by any mean so you might have already given it Read More

The Weather Channel App for iPhone Goes to Version 3.0
Mini_discussion_bubble IntoMobile - Posted Sun, 05 Sep 2010 02:44:11 UTC +00:00
The Weather Channel, One of the best (if not the best) weather apps for iPhone was updated the other day, and I figured it was worth a mention here. This latest version brings the app up to version 3.0, and it packs a couple of very new features. First of these new features is something called Hurricane Central. If you live in a zone affected by hurricanes or tropical storms, Hurricane Central will bring you all of the latest must-have news… right to your iPhone. Very handy and important for sure. Check the latest developments, radar maps and more as that terrible storm approaches. Second is a feature that is probably not-so-crucial, but still, many will get a kick out of it. The Weather Channel has added Facebook integration into their app, allowing you to post weather information to your wall. All-in-all, The Weather Channel for iPhone is a win. The Read More
HOW TO: Track Hurricane Earl Online
Mini_discussion_bubble Mashable - Posted Fri, 03 Sep 2010 00:13:15 UTC +00:00
Hurricane Earl is expected to wreak some havoc on the East Coast this Labor Day weekend. According to the the National Hurricane Center, Earl is expected “pass near the North Carolina outer banks tonight [Thursday]… and approach southeastern New England Friday night.” President Obama has declared a state of emergency for North Carolina, and FEMA has deployed teams to North Carolina, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, New Hampshire, Vermont, and Maine. Whether you live near the National Hurricane Center’s official “Forecast Cone” or you’re one of the 34.4 million people who planned a trip for this weekend, you’ll want to keep an eye on Earl. Here are some resources to kickstart your tracking: Get your weather warnings and advisories right from the source on top of a color-coded map. You can also use the site to check in on where Earl is likely to hit and whether or not hurricane force winds Read More

The Weather Channel App for iPad Updated
Mini_discussion_bubble IntoMobile - Posted Thu, 29 Jul 2010 15:24:14 UTC +00:00
A quick note here for those of you that love your weather apps. Received a note the other day from the good folks at The Weather Channel, letting me know that The Weather Channel app for iPad has been updated. The update has addressed a number of bugs, and overall, the app should run faster, and be more stable on your iPad. Improved performance is always a good thing! In addition to the bug fixes, a current weather and radar map have been added to the welcome screen. Pop open the app, and you’re greeted with current conditions. Good stuff. Other key features include: For more information, you can hit it up in the App Store. Download link is below. The Weather Channel App for iPhone Updated to Version 2.82
Mini_discussion_bubble IntoMobile - Posted Fri, 18 Jun 2010 15:27:53 UTC +00:00
The Weather Channel App for iPhone is one of the most popular weather and forecasting tools out there… and it was recently updated to version 2.82. In a brief note I received from the good folks at The Weather Channel, they tell me the update is a significant one. Key feature updates to the app include: If you’ve never used The Weather Channel for iPhone before, it’s worth a look (especially if weather conditions and forecasts are important to you!). The app pinpoints your location via GPS, and displays full screen, customizable radar maps for reference. There’s live traffic cam integration (handy for checking-in with before you make that morning commute), and Google Mobile Maps are used for fast zooming and panning. Of course, all of the current weather and forecast information for your immediate area is available with one simple tap too. Heck, there’s even a pollen forecast if allergies Read More
Jared Allen Gets An Official App; It’s All Business In The Front And All Party In The Back
Mini_discussion_bubble Apple iPhone Apps - Posted Sun, 18 Apr 2010 15:35:08 UTC +00:00
Rock Software is apparently in the business of making iPhone apps for major sports figures, as they have now released an official Jared Allen app to go along with the Chad Ochocinco Experience and Mark Cuban’s Puzzle Palace.  For those of you who don’t know, Jared Allen is the Minnesota Viking’s star defensive end who has heaping amounts of personality and a fondness for mullets. The official Jared Allen app gives fans and curious individuals an open door to everything Jared Allen, or in his own words “[the app] contains everything that I think you need to help you understand how to live the best life (my life).” The Jared Allen app is customized to meet every Jared Allen fans’ needs.  If you are interested in his personal life, the app contains pics of Allen hunting, what his favorite songs and apps are (apparently TWC and Scrabble are among his favorites), Read More

Reviews

Just ok
Blink 182 Times 2.0 stars Version: 1.0
Many apps can't find my location so I usually type it in, this app won't let me do anything unless it "finds" my location hence it gets 2 stars since I love the idea!
Don't upgrade unless you want the ad
Merlyn 3D 3.0 stars Version: 2.0
Version 2 added a huge ad. Now I understand they wanna make revenue from advertising, but this ad is huge and seems to slow the rest of the application down. Make the ad smaller and make sure it doesn't hurt your performance before!
Decent Start
MGoBlue.com 3.0 stars Version: 1.0
In my opinion this app isn't as accurate compared with the weatherbug app. The map layer options are a neat feature, but otherwise the overall interface lacks overall appeal.
No celcius?
metric-in-usa 1.0 stars Version: 2.01
Uhm; so, no metric (Celcius).... please add.
First choice for weather
Merrygold 5.0 stars Version: 2.01
I prefer it over the weather app that came with the iPhone. I live in a small town, and this app lets me store all the surrounding towns in my favorites list. I can watch live radar that zooms in or out as much as I need with a simple pinch, check hourly, 36 hour, and 10 day forecasts. Recently it allowed me to pinpoint the safest route home from the city where I work, across two other towns, during a severe hailstorm. I highly recommend it. This one has never let me down.
LOSE THE AD!!!!!
i-voyage 3.0 stars Version: 2.0
Very nice app, finally chucked the 14.99 (now down to 4.99, sheesh) one from my iPhone now that TWC 2.0 is here with motion radar. But please...LOSE THE AD ALREADY!!!!! I would gladly pay a buck or two for an app without the ad but would like to see Landscape Animated Radar for my 1 or 2 bucks. What do you think TWC????
Finally A Good Weather App That Isn't $9.99
HockeyStuff 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.1
I am glad that The Weather Channel finally made a weather app other than the basic one that comes with the iphone!
Lose The Ads
NeoSe7en 3.0 stars Version: 2.0
I love this app but I'm not too happy about the addition of ads on the new update. at least make a paid version without ads. I'd be willing to pay a dollar or two to not have that crap on my screen.
Update Ruined It
iPhone-54321 1.0 stars Version: 2.0
Another software update - another wasted app. Do NOT install the update!
BEST WEATHER APP!!!
rnbd 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
BEST WEATHER APP!!!
One of the best
pro music critic 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
This is one of the best weather apps made for iPhone. My favorite features in this one are multi-day/hourly forcasts, as well as radar. Previously I used Weatherbug, though I think that one will remain one my first page, I much prefer it's icon to this one.
Great weather app!!
EastGK14 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
A lot better than the built in app. More detailed forecasts, radar, and Weather Channel video. I highly recommend!
That's more like a weather app!
WeatherNut 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Nice work! Look forward to updates. Animated radar etc.
Ok
Ejp17 1.0 stars Version: 1.0
I'm using an iPod touch and it will not load and won't let me navagate at all if my problem gets solved it would be a 5*
Great Weather App
OldSheep44 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
This is really good weather app. The Weather Channel did it right. Now maybe we can get Al Roker to say at weather.com or on you iPhone.
Old version ?
Brycers 2.0 stars Version: 2.0
How can we get the older version back . I hate the adds at the top ; verry annoying ..
so so
commuter999 3.0 stars Version: 1.0.1
If you added a location by mistake, there seems to be no way to remove it. If you already have your current location saved, and the next time you reply to "yes" again for the same location, it will save it again so you will end up with 2 or more identical locations.
Excellent grouping of weather info
mmmmark0 3.0 stars Version: 2.01
I'm a weather junkie and have been hoping/waiting for TWC to chime in. I like what they've done! I really like the overlays and choices, and the forecast videos are a nice touch.
How do you delete a city?
Harper101 2.0 stars Version: 1.0.1
This is an okay app. It has lots of potential, but, I can't figure out how to delete a city. I would think that it's kind of important to make everything obvious and as seamless as possible. This app doesn't.
Sticking with WeatherBug
gavinovz 3.0 stars Version: 1.0
A nice app but ugly with annoying ads. Still sticking with WeatherBug App.
RADAR LOOP
Sainta 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
Overall, great app; however, radar loop is an absolute must for any weather app. Very surprised TWC did not include, even in early release.
Broken location handling
AstroJuan 1.0 stars Version: 1.0
I work at a site where Automatic Location identification via WiFi doesn't work. This causes this app to revert to manual lookup, which would be fine except that when I attempt to enter a location and press "search" nothing happens. Clearly this is a bug... but it makes this application useless anywhere that automatic location services doesn't work (which on my iPhone Touch limits me to a subset of known WiFi hotspots).
Just what I was looking for!
pdchic 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
I've searched through so many weather apps and have been unable to find Doppler radar AND hourly forecast. This app does both and much more! I love it. Def download it!
Can't stop automatic location finder
reddog58 1.0 stars Version: 1.0
I downloaded this because of the good reviews it received. But when I started the program it went right into it's automatic location finder and it's been running for over 25 min. know and there doesn't seem to be anyway to stop it so that I can enter a location manually. If you can fix this I will probably give it more stars. But as it is it's totally useless to me.
Sub-useless on iPod Touch
Bozocity 1.0 stars Version: 1.0
I live in an area with no cellular service but fast DSL, so I bought an iPod Touch instead of an iPhone. This app appears to allow manual search by zip code, but only after first setting the location automatically through Location Services. Big mistake! Location Services can't set itself from my router, so I can't use the app. It freezes, spinning the progress wheel eternally, never timing out to allow a first-use manual setting.
