12.16.11 For those new to the world of the iPhone, the discovery that you can easily and comfortably read on that little screen is a bit of a revelation. Suddenly, you can carry entire volumes of prose in your pocket, as easily as your contacts list. App developers are keen to this, and so the iTunes App Store is flooded with e-readers and e-books. Some are better than others. Read on to discover the very best of bunch. Stanza is an e-book reader app so good, Amazon snatched it up before it could pose a threat to their Kindle iPhone app. Thankfully, you can still download Stanza for free and use it to read Kindle files, or any other e-book files, for that matter. Stanza has a gorgeous, easy-to-use library view, access to online book repositories like Project Gutenberg, and a clean, distraction-free interface for reading. You can

The once super-popular ebook reading Stanza app got its final update and is now compatible with iOS 5. Amazon, which acquired Stanza in May 2009, is pushing users toward the Kindle app, though Stanza still offers a wider array of document formats and more customization options. That said, we’re kinda sad to learn this is the last update Stanza will get. I guess I can understand Amazon for taking that route but then again I’m hoping they’ll expand the capability of its own Kindle app. So are you sad to learn that Stanza won’t get more updates? Or other solutions like iBookstore, Kindle and Nook work for you just as well? Drop us your two cents in the comments form below, will you? Dusan has been using smartphones since their introduction and is now following the latest trends in the industry. The "convergence" is what he's most excited about, and writing

Stanza was one of the first apps I downloaded when I got an iPhone. It pre-dated Amazon's release of the Kindle iOS app and Apple's own iBooks app, so for awhile Stanza was the best option out there for reading eBooks on an iPhone. Not long after it released the official Kindle app, Amazon bought Stanza. What's happened subsequently should come as no surprise; the app languished, going for as much as nine months between updates. Stanza has recently been updated for iOS 5 compatibility, but according to Macworld, Amazon has confirmed this will be Stanza's final update. This will be sad news for a subset of iOS users, because Stanza has always had support for a wider array of document formats and more customization options than either the Kindle app or iBooks. Amazon's official word on the matter tries to steer Stanza users toward the Kindle app instead, but not

Comic book readers for iOS let anyone indulge in stories of adventure and superheroes. In honor of Comic-Con, we found 10 of the best -- some are free apps that let you buy comics as in-app purchases, and others are paid library apps where you upload digital comics you already own. But at least one should suit every true believer's needs. 1 of 10 ComicsComics, more commonly referred to as Comixology after its developer, is notable for one specific reason: it's the only place where you can buy comics by DC along with publishers, which makes it a must-have for comic fans. I’m a relative newcomer to iBooks (Free), but I already like it a lot more than Stanza on my iPhone 3GS. There’s something about the iBooks that just *feels* right, and the quality of the page turning animations always amazes me. I can’t say anything about the PDF and multimedia changes in this update because the books I read are in simple .epub format, but I do believe the app is just a little bit faster and more stable now. There used to be a very strange bug that would literally teleport me through my literature when I accidentally swiped the bottom of the screen (with the controls hidden — I’m not that stupid), but I haven’t encountered any of this madness in v1.1.1. One last note before I wrap this post up without a ribbon: if you had previously tried iBooks on an iPhone 3G or iPod Touch 2G and

Now that all the commercial e-book distributors have made their iPad apps available, it’s time for an overview of how each app performs, along with their pluses and minuses. One of my primary goals with the iPad was reducing the amount of paper clutter in my house. As a voracious reader, my home library was quickly approaching the need for a Dewey decimal system. While Andy Ihnatko is known for living a year of digital media last year, for a while now I’ve been trying to reach that goal myself. The good news is, the iPad makes it very easy to purchase and consume digital media. I’ve had no eye strain issues with the iPad, having read over 10 books on it since its launch. Neither have I found the weight of the device to be a big issue — however I usually keep it propped on something. Reading outdoors is

By Zach Sims on June 7th, 2010 Stanza brings customization and polish from their iPhone app to a terrific new iPad app that's great for anyone who loves reading. Stanza's Options and Reading Screen Lexcycle, acquired last year by Amazon, released a version of their popular iPhone/iPod touch eReader Stanza for the iPad last week. Stanza was my eReader of choice on my iPhone and I’m thrilled it’s finally been ported to the iPad. It’s a terrific reader that’s compatible with a wide variety of different formats. Before Stanza for iPad was released, I used Calibre to convert my eBooks to iBooks’ required ePub format. Stanza allows users to read in a whole bunch of formats, and the 3.0 release adds PDF, DjVu, and Comic Book Archive support to Stanza’s already extensive library of readable files. Stanza includes the most customizable reading interface I’ve seen on a mobile application. It allows

An update for the Stanza app has just hit the App Store. The most recent update brings the version up to 3.0 and has added support for the iPad. But that was not all that was added, you can also expect to see support for PDF, DjVu and Comic Book Archive. Personally, the PDF sounds good to me. Other changes (for devices running iPhone OS 3.2 or higher) include; Given that above change list, it sounds like I can email myself a PDF file and then have it open and be readable in the Stanza app. Pretty sweet. of course, the ability to drag and drop in iTunes sounds pretty nice also.

Update: Our latest tutorial on how to use Dropbox and Calibre to store and remotely transfer ebooks to your iDevices is now up. You can check it out here. Early adopters of the iPad already know that the device is not only great for surfing the web, playing “HD” games or watching movies on the gorgeous 9.7-inch IPS screen, but also for reading ebooks. Apple’s own e-reader app, iBooks, has been well received and its overall design makes it easy and enjoyable to read books on the iPad. It even allows you to upload non-iBookstore and DRM-free ePub documents/ebooks onto the app via iTunes. Unfortunately, iBooks only accepts the “industry standard” ePub format, meaning those with a collection of ebooks in various formats (LIT, MOBI, PDB, HTML, RTF etc) are out of luck. While Stanza (my personal favorite) and other e-reader apps on the iPhone/iPod Touch do accept other ebook formats, there are currently none with

If you don't already know about Project Gutenberg, you should. The site has over 30,000 free ebooks, most of them classics whose copyrights have lapsed. The site includes big-name titles from big-name authors, representing everyone from Dante Alighieri to H.G. Wells. The site's free digital ebooks saved me untold hundreds of dollars while I was doing undergrad work for my English degree. 9to5Mac points out that all of those ebooks should be compatible with Apple's forthcoming iBooks app for the iPad. iBooks will be using the ePub format, and Apple itself has said "you can add free ePub titles to iTunes and sync them to the iBooks app on your iPad." ePub is one of many formats available for Project Gutenberg's ebooks; therefore, it stands to reason that those ebooks should all work in the iBooks app. However, even if Project Gutenberg's ebooks don't work in iBooks, whether for technical reasons

Die NYTimes zitiert den ‘Kindle’-Vizepräsidenten Ian Freed: We have actually developed a tablet-based interface that redesigns the core screen and the reading experience.

We’re really excited about Apple’s iPad, and we want to make all of our products available for it as soon as we can. We requested Stanza remove the USB functionality in their app as it was a simple case of the developer using private APIs in violation of the developer agreement.

Stanza, my favourite e-book reader on the iPhone, has been downdated. It’s hard to call this newest version of the app an update when all it does is remove one feature. Granted, I’ve never actually synced a book over USB (wi-fi is fast enough), but that option will be gone for new users from here on out. Existing users don’t have to update, but since there’s no “ignore app update” button in iTunes, they’ll have to deal with the app update badge always teasing them about one more update. TechCrunch tried to do a bit of follow-up with Stanza about why the change was made, but they hit up a legal brick wall pretty quickly. Stanza can’t seem to talk about anything that goes on behind the curtain. This news could simply be Apple being a little grumpy about USB syncing (they don’t really like apps doing this), but when you

Feb 2nd 2010 at 7:00PM If these features aren't going to ever be in Stanza, can we at least have an iBook app for the iPhone? What Iam said. Apple is wearing my patience thin. In the short term, even if Stanza is newly lacking USB sync, one could still use DiskAid or similar and copy directly to ~/DCIM/Stanza. This really frustrates me. I use USB sync, putting my documents in the central DCIM location, as my standard way to move files to the app, and I always have. This is stuff like PDF files or Microsoft Office documents for work, finances, study, etc. Referencing a central location (such as the DCIM folder) for all files is a huge deal. It means I can use two different apps to read the same file (such as Good Reader, PDF Expert, Quickoffice, etc). If I'm in Good Reader and I want to view

By Rene Ritchie, Tuesday, Feb 2, 2010 | UPDATE: PatternMusic reveals that the issue is (mis)use of the DCIM folder (digital camera image folder — where your camera roll pictures are stored) to transfer non-image related files. Apple, however, precludes apps from reading or writing data files to any other place except the app’s “sandbox” document folder through their developer agreement. ORIGINAL: TechCrunch reports that the latest update to the Amazon-owned Stanza eBook reader [Free - iTunes link], version 2.1, removed USB sharing as demanded by Apple’s iTunes App Store: Just for your reference: the feature enabled users to transfer books in the ePub or eReader format to their mobile devices using a USB cable.

Our fantastically white-and-shiny sister blog, TUAW, has just published a guide all about the EPUB ebook format. This will be of most interest to Apple fans who are planning to buy an iPad, because it's the file format that the iBookstore will use. Even if you're not planning on getting an iPad, EPUB is the format used by all major ebook readers (except the Kindle), so the guide is probably worth reading anyway! EPUB is based on an international standard and is intended to be the ebook format -- to that end, it supports just about everything, including the possibility to implement a custom DRM scheme to satisfy publishers. The TUAW guide lists a few great Mac apps for making EPUB files (including the delightful open-source and cross-platform Sigil), but Windows-only options are slim pickings, unless you fancy forking out some serious dollars for Adobe's InDesign. Overlooked in much of the hype about the iPad announcement earlier in the week was a comment by Steve Jobs in the Keynote presentation where he mentioned that the iBooks app for iPad would take advantage of the popular EPUB format for electronic books. Since we're all going to get a lot more familiar with this format in the near future, we felt it would be a good time to provide our readers with more information about EPUB. EPUB is the same format used by the popular Stanza [free, iTunes link] app for iPhone and iPod touch. It's a free and open standard format created by the International Digital Publishing Forum (IDPF), and it's designed for reflowable content that can be optimized to whatever device is being used to read a book file. The IDPF has championed EPUB as a single format that can be used by publishers and conversion houses,

However, there is a little something to be said about the feeling of turning a page instead of just scrolling down a stream of uninterrupted text, and so this limited time offer to download the Classics ebook app for free is interesting. Classics features over a dozen literary classics (the devs sometimes add a few more via an app update), and every title features chapters and cover art. I personally still prefer Stanza because of the built-in bookstore and the ability to add most any other book you own, but Classics’ main strength right now is the great page-turning animations. It’s silly, but I sometimes think I’ll get a paper cut from the bloody thing. The iTunes Store doesn’t say how long the sale will be around, but I know it’s

BookReader [iTunes Link] , a US$4.99 app for devices running OS 2.21 or higher, has just joined the crowded eBook market -- but it brings little to the table to recommend itself. The app when first run looks beautiful. You are shown a wonderfully rendered bookshelf which looks very similar to the one found in Classics [iTunes Link], but a bit more nicely rendered, showing the spines of books instead of covers in a scrolling list. Impressive, but now what? I really had no idea since there were no instructions on how to operate the app either in the app, or on the Readdle site. This, as I've often said, is a major downfall of many of the apps in the store. It would be fine if it were an adventure game, but not at all acceptable in something offering utility that you would like to get at quickly. The only

Last month Amazon released the free Kindle application for the iPhone in the US [App Store link], shortly after the Kindle 2 hit the market. If you haven't used it yet, it works quite well. Users can buy books (but not subscriptions) from the Kindle Store via Mobile Safari for reading on their iPhones, although the purchasing process is easier from a desktop browser. Unlike the Kindle, the iPhone app is able to display color images, but it lacks text-to-speech as well as a direct connection to the Kindle Store. Online retailer Amazon.com has purchased the development firm behind the most popular eBook reader application for Apple’s iPhone in a bid to extend its reach of the digital book market beyond its Kindle device. Lexcycle, makers of the Stanza application for the iPhone and iPod touch, announced the acquisition on its website this week, saying its “excited” about the transition and that it “could not think of a better company to join during this exciting time.” They appear to like the word “Exciting” or some form of it. A free application downloaded more than 1 million times by App Store shoppers, Stanza (App Store) offers users 24-hour access to a catalog of over 100,000 eBooks in the open ePub format, an eBook container not supported on Amazon’s popular Kindle digital reader device. Stanza: download 10 free e-books from Random House and thousands more from other sources. I love reading books on my iPhone, but I don't love e-book prices. For now, let's look at ways you can read on the cheap--or, at least, the cheaper--on your iPhone. Kindle: read a sample chapter of any book in Amazon's library before you spend your money.

Today, Apple announced that its customers have now downloaded a whopping one billion applications from its App Store. Here at ReadWriteWeb, quite a few of us have iPhones, so we thought that this would be a good time to feature some of our favorite apps. We download and test a lot of iPhone apps, but here are the ones that have stood the test of time for us. The App Store is now home to over 35,000 applications, so this is obviously only a small selection of applications, but these are the apps that we don't hesitate to recommend to our friends. We couldn't get feedback from everybody on the RWW team (and our BlackBerry users weren't very forthcoming with suggestions either), but here are the recommendations from Richard MacManus (R), Marshall Kirkpatrick (M), Frederic Lardinois (F), and Phil Glockner (P). When people ask me if it's hard to be a writer, I tell them the challenge is not just thinking up the words, but putting them in the right order. Then they roll their eyes and walk away, reminding me I need to work on both my material and my delivery. Anyway, like any professional, a writer relies on tools. Here are five that make a great addition to any iPhone or iPod Touch: The Dictionary.com app is perfect for writers, and not just because it's free. Well, did I miss anything? What apps do you use to enhance your writing life?

Solid ereader

If you only plan to install one ebook reader on your iPhone, then this is the one to install. It reads the most popular formats, gives you a wide variety books to choose from, and the selection of free books is astounding. You can change the font type, size, and color; paper color and texture; and more. I am actually reading David Copperfield on my iPhone. I wouldn't have thought it possible.
Good but flawed

I've spent some time comparing Sanza and eReader and I've come to the conclusion that eReader is the superior program.
Stanza is a strong app, but it has a few serious flaws when it comes to handling the library. First off, it uses a "dumb" sort when listing by author. Umm... Guys... H. G. Wells doesn't go under "H", he goes under "W". Second is that the app can't tell you as simple a thing a how many page are in a book.
EReader handles both of those things without a hitch. Come on, Stanza, it's not exactly rocket surgery.
The big advantage to Stanza is that it has more built-in sources for content; and in the end, of course, content is king.
Great start, but only a few things missing

I absolutely love reading on a portable device. I have been doing so for several years now. This is so much cleaner than the other apps available now. And you really can't beat the price. However, it really need inverted text display (white on black) this just makes reading in the dark so much easier on the eyes. Secondly, I realize the page changing from side to side serves as a way of chunking the data for loading purposes, it also acts as a closer analog to a real book. However, this is so disconcerting while reading. I really want full chapters in a scroll view that I can slide up with my thumb while reading. To me it is fundamentally a better experience on a device like this. Aside from these to issues, this application is stellar. Great work, great features. Keep it up.
Best Ebook App! Deserves to be #1 ! Superior interface and ebook portability

As a mac user, I find this application just about perfect for my needs (ymmv). I can load any ebook I like, the user interface is great and I can change the settings to make the books more readable. You can change: text size, text and background colors, font, the length of the 'page turn', the spacing and page controls. Even if you don't like the default interface it is easily customizable.
Second Revision... PC is Now Supported

Just checked the developer's website and, lo and behold, there is now a Beta release of a PC desktop reader... it has some issues (what beta doesn't?) which they clearly spell out, but this is now a 5-star app!
Awesome App

This is a great App. for anyone who is interested in online books. It's very well done and stable. It comes with one book, "The Time Machine" but there are hundreds of books for free in the catalog for download. How could you go wrong. Good price too.

You won't regret downloading this application. Yes it is first version and hopefully their will be updates, but this is the best reader you can get right now, and it's free. I love the easy to download free books that it has to offer.

Well I don’t usually rave about apps but I simply have to about Stanza. If you like to read then it’s a must-have app for your iPhone. I had been waiting for Apple to come out with some sort of competition for the Amazon Kindle and here it is.
MUST READ BEFORE BUYING ANYOTHER eREADER!

I am really glad I put off buying bookshelf because I found stanza while just browsing. It has more features than the other ereaders & it's free. Yes, you can read PDF, txt & even kindle books from Amazon. The downside is that it will not display graphics at all (to save resources), which is no big deal for most books unless your PDF book happens to be pictures of pages not the typed version. I didn't know there were different versions of PDF filed but some PDF books are just pictures of the pages, btw, you know this by whether or not u can highlight individual words or not. If it is just a picture then this program reads it as such & won't display it. I haven't encourered it yet but you might.
I hope this program catches on. I like a programmer that helps out the community, eventually he said he may charge ($10-15) once the bugs are worked out but until then it's free & better features then the rest.
So thanks programmer & to all the user, spread the word.
Works well and can load your own books

This reads a wide variety of ebook formats including pdf files. You can also load your own ebooks. To load your own ebooks you need to load Stanza for the Mac. Next you open a file on the Stanza application on the Macintosh. You then make that Stanza application on the Mac sharable. Next you set Stanza on iPhone to browse sharable documents and you'll see your Macintosh and eventually find options to physically download the file to your iPhone.
Amazing App!!! Deserves to be #1- Windows now supported.

I downloaded this program, on my on-going hunt for the perfect e-book reader. Well, this is it. This simple and elegantly designed program makes it easy to ready ebooks on the go. Basic little feature that help.

My favorite part about Stanza? It allows you to easily download free ebooks from within the app using Project Gutenberg. Forget the hassle of other programs, Stanza makes it easy. But you spend most of your time reading these books, not finding them - Stanza rocks at that too.
What I've been waiting for but...

I like that this is free AND I can transfer stuff from my computer. The problem is that this "Stanza Desktop" mentioned in the info isn't available on Windows.

It seems quite unintuative that reading a book on the iPhone would be a pleasant experience.
However five pages into the book the iPhone 'dissapeared' and I was just reading book.
If that isn't success I don't know what is!

This app just made my jaw drop. The available titles are great, and there are quite a few to chose from, including some new releases that are CC licensed. I'm glad I didn't get a kindle because I shan't be needing it thanks to stanza. Now if you will excuse me, I have some classics to read.

I bought one of the single books before I got stanza and when I found it I was pissed that I hadn't earlier. It holds many books and many are free. Too bad I had bought that other book.

I've purchased a few of the standalone books and installed some of the other free-book readers and this puts them all to shame. Thanks to Stanza my iPhone is now a library - if you want a pocket full of literary goodness, don't hesitate download Stanza now!

After moving from my Palm to the iPhone, my major regret was the loss of a good eBook reader app. TextOnPhone was a good alternative, but was a web app only. I found Stanza after purchasing two other eBook app's first. I wish I had found this one earlier.
