Posted 12/13/2010 at 9:17am | by Michael Simon It’s the most wonderful time of the year--that is, until you have to fight your way through 12 months of knots and brave the cold so that Santa knows to stop at your house for some cookies. Of course, it’s just not Christmas without lights, and it’s just not Mac|Life without a few iPhone apps to help you deck your halls and keep everything calm and bright. Even if you’re just a bush-and-awning decorator, that doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy the hard work of other jolly souls in your neck of the woods. You could go old-school and drive aimlessly after dark until you come across a house worth slowing down for, or you could grab Christmas Lights GPS (free), which will lead you to the best and brightest light shows around your block and let you tour displays around the world. And

If you've been watching TV over the last few days (and who hasn't, with that USA / Canada hockey game and the tsunami coverage), you may have seen the latest in the series of iPhone ads. The ad, titled "Family Travel," features a voice-over by a Mom who gushes that "It's unbelievable how much better family trips have gotten..." as she demonstrates using the Southwest Airlines app to check in on a flight from Denver to LA, finds a restaurant for the family (Heidi's Brooklyn Deli) in the C concourse at Denver International Airport with Gate Guru, makes sure that she has entertainment for her kids in the form of "Finding Nemo" loaded in the iPod app, and then turns off the living room lights at home with the Schlage Link app. For those of you who are sticklers for advertising accuracy, note that Southwest flight 1403 is not an actual

Just last week I checked us in on the way to airport. Found the kids a snack near the gate. And even had their favorite movie ready to go. Then my husband turned to me and said, “Did we turn off the lights?” So we turned off the lights. And that’s why I don’t go anywhere without my iPhone.” Apps shown in Ad: - Southwest Airlines (Free) - GateGuru (Free) - Schlage LiNK (Free, but requires compatible hardware and service plan)

In this latest iPhone ad Family Travels, Apple is pimping an app that "can turn off the lights". The app is called the same little utility that was featured in Apple's "12 Apps of Christmas" holiday spot as "an app that can light up the tree". Schlage Link is a free download in the App Store. It can control several Schlage home devices including a module for lights, entry door locks, thermostats and in home video cameras. Both from near and from afar. (watch video after break) The minor downside of this fantastical concept, is that your iPhone must be paired with a specific home automation module which requires a $12.99 monthly service plan and purchasing the for $299. That's just for starters. If that speed bump doesn't slow you down, then you may be in for a seriously geeky treat. The idea of controlling key functions at home from your

In latest iPhone holiday ad "12 Apps of Christmas", Apple closes with "an app that can light up the tree". The app caused instant tingling in my geeky parts. It's called which is a free download in the App Store. This app controls several Schlage devices including the light module, entry door locks and in home video cameras. The huge buzz killer is that your iPhone must be paired with a specific home automation module that also requires a $12.99 monthly service plan and purchasing the for $299. Those nerds have created a real lock-down hostage program here in order to experience some comfort and joy from this little iPhone geek treat. Which makes it game over for me. The guy from Apple’s “There’s an App for That” series of commercials does a fine, upstanding job, don’t get me wrong. He’s a credit to his profession, in fact, and has become iconically associated with one of the most successful products ever released. But he’s seriously ruining Christmas. A new Apple ad in the series features an app-centric take on the classic “12 Days of Christmas” holiday carol, as rendered with uncompromising unmusicality by the voice that smugly informs us about everything there’s an app for. The apps don’t correspond to the actual items described in the original tune, but instead highlight various holiday-time activities. Here’s how it breaks down (all links direct to iTunes): So all told, that’s $22 for a complete holiday. Is it worth it? Probably not. Actually definitely not. Trust someone who has a whole heap of Christmas-themed apps cluttering up his iTunes library from last year,

Dec 17th 2009 at 2:00PM whats the one with the presents falling into the bag at :13? It's a good thing my "Santa Game" app wasn't available until just yesterday - that would have made "seven games for playing" and messed the whole song up! Maybe not the best iPhone ad Apple ever did, but cute. It's the holidays afterall. Haha. I love it! I can't wait to see it on the TV. Do people really download that many holiday themed apps? Only 2 of the apps are Christmas/Holiday themed. Did anyone else find the guy's attempts to talk along with the music annoying? Five. gold. rings. Whats the last one? about a christmas tree lights turn on'er? cyclingplatypus is right, it is Schlage LiNK. What you all may not know is that it doesn't just turn your chirstmas lights off and on. It can also control your thermastat, lock and

But can you control locks/devices/bridges located at multiple houses under a single account? Could not find an answer to this on their site.
Love the app...works perfectly....up and running in 90 minutes

I just purchased the Schlage deadbolt system and had everything working in 90 minutes. I had no issues setting up the system. The lock and the lighting control work well.
Works very well

If you own a Schlage lock setup, this app is for you! Very easy control of your z-wave devices via iPhone.
Nice icons and verification that commands were followed.
Yes, there is the Schlage monthly fee to pay, but as I said, if you already use Schlage's service, this app is a FREE upgrade that is well worth trying!
I currently own 4 Schlage locks, and an extensive z-wave network. This app controls everything well.
I only wish I could use the app to view my Panasonic Network Cameras as well.
Schlage application is garbage!

Even though the application is "free", the service and the policies behind it which are paired to this application need close examination. You buy a Schlage Link lock -- with a bridge. You set it up. To even TEST it, you sign up for a $12.95 month service. No trial period, no free 30 days, no right of cancellation for a refund. If you can't get it to work on a technical basis - you're out your money, by Schlage policy -- NO REFUND. This software won't even work with another Z-wave bridge, only Schlage. This software will only work with those select devices which are "approved" by Schlage, meaning -- they got revenue by selling/branding them. It will not support another Z-wave device, which is a shock to people. Also, there is NO local mode, you MUST pay to play, can't decide that you only want to use it around the house and use the functionality by WiFi. In short, go with true Z-wave their equipment DOES work with other Z-wave controllers, AVOID Schlage (even though the locks work well, don't use their bridge or THIS software!
Excellent app with all devices! Very impressed.

I've now installed the 3 locks, 3 light fixtures, a thermostat and wireless camera. All work flawlessly and were very east to setup. I was actually surprised I had no issues at all, especially with the camera. Having tried many systems in the past (x10, IP cameras, code locks, etc.) this system and this app are fantastic. The monthly fee is too high, but they say they will add video storage and more which would male it worthwhile. For now the ease of use and consistent quality make it worth it, as long as they continue to innovate, add new products and improve the online features. This is the future!

Excellent application for operating the Schlage Link locks remotely. I use it all the time to allow access to my home from any location in the country. I only wish other Schlage Link devices were available such as the IP Camera, and Climate Control which they advertise.
