By Kevin Stout on April 13th, 2012 Take a look at our favorite four apps for taxes and finance. It’s coming down to the time for us procrastinators to either suck it up and do our taxes or file an extension. Taxes, and finance in general, are not the most exciting of tasks. And on a yearly basis, I seem to wait until the last minute to get this done (just did mine today). When taxes and finance are put into app form, they can be a little less boring. Check out our four favorite tax season apps for taxes and generally being in a better mood about finance and budgeting. Tax Receipt Log: The most important thing about finance apps is speed and organization. Tax Receipt Log makes the process of saving receipts both quick and organized. Users snap a picture of the receipt, enter an amount, and tag it

OS X Lion isn't out yet, but it could be hitting the Mac App Store as soon as next week. For many Mac users, the decision on whether or not to upgrade to Lion is boiling down to one incompatible app -- Quicken for Mac. We've been hearing from our readers for several weeks that Quicken is the sticking point. In this post, I'll discuss what your options are to control your personal finances with a Lion-compatible Mac app. You'll be glad to know that Intuit's flagship app isn't the only game in town. Intuit sent out a note to "Valued Quicken Customers" over the last few days stating that Quicken for Mac 2005, 2006, and 2007 will not run on OS X Lion. Intuit offered some solutions that had TUAW readers steaming: The slimmed-down, next-generation app will work on Lion, but it doesn't have all the features users of the

My favourite personal finance app and simply one of the best ones out there in the App Store has just received a MAJOR update. With the release of PocketMoney 3.0, Catamount Software have added tons of new features. Even the previous version earned a Kiss It rating in my review and with the latest release it’s simply a crime not to pick it up. Granted, the major updates – Themes, Receipt Photos and Built-in Charts are available as in-app purchases for $0.99, $0.99 and $2.99 respectively, but still – there are lots of features that are available for free. More info after the gap. Version 3.0 is a major update of PocketMoney. We focused on improving the user interface to make it prettier and easier to use. We centralized preferences to remove clutter. We added the highly requested email backup and web browser based file transfer options in addition to SyncDocs.

¡Awesome!

Version: 1.0
This is a great app! I can control all my accounts at once in an organized matter. I input my limit and it let's me know what's available. I know exactly what I can spend and never worry of going over my limit.
I give up
EvilTimmy
Version: 2.4
I'm tired of fighting with this app to make it work for me. I'm a geek user who reads things carefully so it's not me.
As a preface, this app may work perfectly well for you if you don't need to do anything vaguely complicated.
I have two big problems with PocketMoney. One of them is likely not their fault, the other is.
1) Microsoft Money just can't deal with QIF files from the app. Due to some import matching logic (that can't be disabled!), it changes categories of transactions and/or just makes things up.
I was looking for an app I could use to keep track of things on the go rather than saving receipts and I can't do it with this app since I can't get the transactions into my desktop software without a lot of editing and re-entry.
2) The implementation of split transactions is a mess...and I do a lot of split transactions. Especially with transfers to another account. Today I discovered that the app put a transfer to Cash (that is part of a split transaction) into a budget category, erroneously blowing up the budget. It's a simple transfer between accounts with no category assigned! But because it's part of the terribly implemented splits, the app handled it incorrectly.
I give up. Guess I'll wait to see if the Quicken app is ever made useful now that they bought Mint. (And probably switch back to Quicken now that Microsoft killed Money. UGH!!)
All the financial management software programmers should be pummeled beyond recognition. There is not a single program that is cleanly designed and works without a fight. *Maybe* Mint is clean but I can't keep a long-term checkbook history with it.
Good app but hoping for new upgrades soon

Version: 1.0
I like the app. it is simple to use and helpful for what I need, however a budget would be a great upgrade. I would also like to see icons for each category of expenses.
The only complete Checking & Budgeting App
iBrunos82
Version: 2.3.2
Bottom line: This is the only complete app that features both accounts (checking register) and budgeting. I put this first because for $4.99 you should know what you are getting.
Needs improvement

If PockeyMoney could sync with my bank accounts and credit card companies and download the transactions automatically it work be worth purchasing.
Nice checkbook companion

Version: 1.0.1
Very nice application. I am not having any crashes problem like others. The only thing that I would of like to see is the ability to add recurring transaction. I also would like to have an icon for savings. Mine doesn't have that and I will like to differentiate savings from checking. I'm sure the new 1.2 upgrade will have more things to come. Keep up the good work!
Crashes

Version: 1.0
Worked good for a couple of days. Now I can't launch it. It keeps kicking me back out to the home screen.
A enxellent financial application....

Version: 1.2
This is a very flexible application to manage credit card, banking accounts. It allows list and graph reports. Integrates well with sister app Checkplease and MPG(soon to come). Allows easy transfers between accounts and is reported to soon allow uploading and downloading of date for backup. A great buy!
Crashes on my iPhone.

Version: 1.0
I'm unable to really assess the software, since it started crashing on launch after I entered my first account. I have not been able to sucessfully launch it since.
An old favorite weathers the Apple "Ice Age"

Version: 1.0
This was one of my favorite apps when I had my old Apple Newton Message Pads (130 and 2000). Well conceived and very suitable to this platform. Perfect for those who want to keep tabs on their everyday purchases. Thanks, Catamount! Great to see you again.
Great for Keeping Track of Your Checkbook!
Imliving4him
Version: 1.2
I am very excited about this application; had a checkbook application on my Palm and was hoping there would be a way to get one on the iPhone. I, too, lost all of my data with the update. I'm wondering if syncing it on iTunes rather than on the iPhone (to receive the update) would stop this from happening, as data is backed up before the updates go on during the sync. My request in an update (and maybe it already does this and I haven't found it yet) is the ability to purge (or roll) all of the cleared transactions into one entry so that the lines and lines of transactions can be just those transactions that are pending. I know there is a way to show only uncleared transactions, but when I go out of PocketMoney and come back in, the cleared transactions are right back again. I'd love it if they could have the option of being rolled into one entry once they are cleared to free up the scrolling to get to the transactions that are still pending in your checking account.
Superb

Version: 1.0
Worth every penny. I used to keep track of transactions in the Note app the ships with the iPhone, and it was a hassle - I would bring these notes home and transfer them to an actual notebook to keep the balance of my accounts. This program does all of that for you. I have my checking account, our joint checking account, my savings account, PayPal, credit card balance and even an entry to keep track of how much money I have in the bank that isn't meant for bills (so I don't exceed spending limits in my budget). This program is worth every penny.
Perfect
Eklektic
Version: 1.0
Great app that works as a checkbook/account balancer for your personal bank account, credit card accounts as well as any others you want to create (including expense accounts). You can do a lot with this and really get into painful detail for each transaction you record, or you can keep it simple and enter just a few details. All the other programs in the app store are especially focused on expense accounts for business, but this one can also help you balance your personal accounts -- who doesn't want more functionality at the same price? Nice going, Catamount!

Version: 2.0
I bought this app when it was version 1.0 and costed $10! Version 1.0 crashed on me every 30 seconds, so after 5 minutes, I declared I was robbed and moved on with my life. So with version 2.0, I decided to give it another shot (Thanks Apple for not making me pay again!).
PocketMoney User for 14 Years: Apple's Update System STINKS
iMarc845
Version: 1.2
I've used PocketMoney for a long time: first on the Newton, then Treo, now iPhone. This version is still new and the developer (Hardy) is working to fix known bugs and add needed features. He uploads a new version to Apple and it takes them OVER TWO WEEKS to "approve" it and add it to the AppStore. That is ridiculous! It makes him look bad when in fact, he has several fixes and features waiting for Apple to release them. Apple needs to promptly review and post updates. THEY are the bottleneck for MANY small developers.
Very Efficient App for Managing Money...but does have bugs
PeterMob
Version: 2.0
I just got this app today and it looks great, however I have noticed several bugs that quits the application consistently that were not in the Lite Version. I'll be happy when an update comes out to fix these problems.
Great application in spite of a few bugs
jtakeo
Version: 1.0.1
Though there are a few bugs that are being worked out, this application is great! The interface is simple and to the point. You don't have to be a genius to figure out how to use it. I have used PocketMoney previously on Palm and on a newer platform, and have noticed that the performance continues to get better.

Version: 1.0
Worth its weight and gold. Easy but detailed enough to keep track of your accounts.
Works like a check book - remember those?
JoeMama9999
Version: 1.0
Mildly complicated to use. Doesn't appear to have an export function. Cannot set up budgets and assign/monitor those expenses. Basically you set up an "amount" in an "account" (ie your checking account or credit card balance) then add "transactions" via "withdrawl"or "deposit". Some graphing features. If you want an electronic check book, then this is your bag. Otherwise save your $9.99 for something else.
HORRIBLE - Not what I expected and it Crashes!
tallpaul84
Version: 1.0
This application is NOT worth the $10. I was expecting online bank access but it's just a record keeper. I usually have 5-10 credit card transactions and cash transactions a day not to mention interest on savings, i would have to spend an hour a day manualy updating it for it to be accurate... Come on, it's an iphone- make it talk to my bank to enter those things for me!
Freezes and inaccurate
Kssable
Version: 1.0
I'm noticing that my balance is inaccurate when I use this program. It also freezes A LOT!!! It shuts off on it's own too.
Save your money! I regret buying this junk.
I had problems with this app...
tazonk
Version: 1.0
This app doesn't even work... it opens up a blank screen on the iPhone, then after about five seconds dumps me back to the home screen. I reported the problem and was told to take it up with Catamount's support. But Catamount doesn't have a support system, just a user's forum. I wouldn't recommend this app.
Yes, it's a checkbook
Miramba
Version: 1.0
One of the "can't live without" apps in my opinion. I'm an old PocketQuicken user from the PalmOS days. I like PocketMoney's interface and views better than SplashMoney. It's simple and user-friendly. Slight bug: when you manually type in a "category" it automaticaly adds it to the memorized list. However, it doesn't do that with the payees. The ability to export to a file (for maybe importing to financial software) would be useful, too, especially for backup purposes. It would also be nice if it searched the memorized lists when you start typing in a field (payee/category).
Clearly an Early Release
rsbell
Version: 1.0
Needs search/sorting options. Very slow to scroll with more than 10 transactions. Does not use the iPhone's built in word completion/spell-check, so mis-typing is very common.
Love it
djchones
Version: 1.0
Flawless in my opinion!!!
works great!
samela101
Version: 1.0
This is a great application that can be as simple or as detailed as you want. The graphs were more than I expected, I thought that kind of functionaIity would be a long time in the works. I wanted an application that would sync with my computer, hopefully ms money. This application will do just that, soon, for free (unlike splash money which I found out after I paid for it *frown*), as soon as apple starts approving the updates already made by the developer. Also, the developer is very responsive to users (always a plus) especially on the forums. http://catamount.com/forums/index.php
finally for my ipod touch
sungecko
Version: 2.1
i've been using this program since the newton days (including the palm/clie period), and this program is one i just don't want to live without. now that i've been using it with my ipod, i'm thrilled. better than before, and easier to use. hardy's experience has paid off. and he's got more ideas for it to come. i highly recommend this program.
