JotNot converts your iPhone into a portable scanner.
You can use JotNot to process your pictures of documents, receipts, whiteboards & blackboards, business cards, and notes, making them easier to read, print, and share. All the processing happens on your iPhone so you do not have worry about confidential data. There's no subscription fee, nor do you need the Internet access to process documents.
We fully stand behind JotNot and we want to hear from you: please email us at support@jotnot.com.
Here is what the press has to say about JotNot:
"I’ve found that if you take the picture carefully, JotNot can capture a document as well as a fax machine can. And, of course, it’s much easier to carry around."
» The New York Times, July 2009
"I am amazed at how readable the processed images are."
» MacWorld UK / The Industry Standard
"The application works perfectly for casually taking photographs of your documents to ensure that you don’t lose them, and is one that I’ll probably wind up using pretty frequently."
» TechCrunch
This update (v1.3) includes Evernote integration--allowing you to save your scans directly to Evernote from JotNot. Evernote (evernote.com) turns your iPhone into an extension of your brain. Evernote is a free multi-award winning web service that magically "reads" the text and handwriting in your scans making them searchable. It is an amazing service, and one we highly recommend using in conjunction with JotNot.
JotNot is the only scanning application with any of the following features:
• Evernote integration
• A WiFi server to access PDFs from a computer
• Automatic image processing algorithms (fixes uneven lighting and shadows)
JotNot provides the following additional features:
• A simple, easy to use interface
• Ability to email scans as PDFs, PNGs, or JPEGs
• Presets for receipts, documents, and more
• Automatic paper sizing: Letter, Legal, or A4
• Ability to save to the Photo Library
• Ability to import from the Photo Library
For a free demonstration of JotNot's advanced image processing technology, please try JotNot Lite (the imaging technology is the same, but the app is a few versions behind v1.3).
Using JotNot is easy. Just follow these simple steps:
1) Take a picture of a receipt, whiteboard, blackboard, document, business card, or note; alternatively you can import one from your Photo Library.
2) Drag the corners of the blue rectangle, aligning them with the corners of your document; the blue area will be saved and processed.
3) Adjust the processing settings (by clicking the gear icon) and/or select the paper size (leaving it on "Auto" is fine).
4) Click "Process" to enhance the image. You will be shown a preview of the enhanced image. From here you can click:
• The envelope to send an email,
• The arrow to send the image to Evernote,
• The "info" button for Settings / turn on WiFi,
• "Done" to save to the Photo Library or as a PDF,
• "Select" to go back to the Selection Screen.
5) To process another image, select "Done" and choose "Return to Main".
It is that simple. Here are a couple of tips to get the best quality scans:
• Make sure the document is flat
• Ensure that the document is well lit
• Use a preset mode when possible
• For faint text try maxing out the contrast
• If you have a 1st Gen or 3G iPhone, you MUST hold the phone at least 12 inches away to get a sharp image (due to the fixed focus lens).
We are actively developing JotNot and look forward to frequent updates. Please take our survey at http://blog.jotnot.com. We decide which features to add next based on the survey and based on your emails.
We provide email support for JotNot--if you have a request, question, or problem please email us at support@jotnot.com. We will respond within 24 hours. ...More

Every year, come tax season, I curse myself. I might write about all things digital, but when it comes to receipts and important documents, my record-keeping is analog amateur hour. So this year I’m getting serious about scanning. Fortunately, there are plenty of portable scanning options out there, ranging from mobile apps to wand-like scanners. This week, I set out to determine whether an app or a pocket-sized scanner with receipt-management software can really do the job of a larger scanner. I tested three options: The smartphone app JotNot Scanner Pro by MobiTech 3000, PlanOn’s tiny SlimScan SS100 scanner, and Xerox’s new wand-shaped Mobile Scanner. The JotNot Pro app uses the iPhone’s camera to capture images of documents. And after five days of testing, it became apparent that the app was great on the go, but I wouldn’t use it to scan tons of files. The SlimScan scanner’s size was attention-grabbing,

Apparent Corporations Doxie scanner has been a hit since it arrived a few years back. It's small, lightweight, and pretty well perfect for mobile use. So when I heard that the company had come out with a new scanner called Doxie Go ($199) that allegedly removes the need to have a computer around when you need to scan something, I got a bit excited. Read on for a full review of the Doxie Go. When I first saw the PR blasts for the Doxie Go, my thought was that they'd figured out a way to build in Wi-Fi for a scan-to-cloud solution. Nope. Maybe it would use an iPhone or iPad as a go-between for scanning on the road? Not really. So how do they do PC-free scanning? It's quite simple, actually. The scanner has some built-in memory, and also has an SD slot for expanding storage. No SD cards on

Editor’s note: This guest post is written by Alex Ahlund, the former CEO and founder of AppVee and AndroidApps, which were acquired by mobile application directory Appolicious. About this time last year, he gave us his picks of the best iPhone apps of 2009 up until then, so we thought we’d make it an annual tradition. I’ve been involved in the iPhone app industry since it first began in 2008 and I have to say that it has come a long way. I’ve seen it grow from a meager launch of 500 applications in the App Store to currently over 225,000. In only two years, the industry has matured at hyperspeed. It spawned an entire ecosystem to support it from a multitude of news and editorial resources to developer engines, promotional services and ancillary niches. With over five billion app downloads and a billion dollars at stake, it’s no surprise that

This is just a quick update to inform other JotNot users that the app now properly interfaces with Dropbox, the cloud-based folder syncing service for your Mac or PC. The news came directly from someone at Dropbox and I can confirm that I was able to log right into my account. All you need to do is enter your username (e-mail address) and password once and then throw your scanned document into the Dropbox folder of your choice. You can’t create new folders from within JotNot, but there’s always the free, official Dropbox app for that. This latest update brings the number of services that JotNot can interface with up to five: Evernote, Box.net. WebDAV/iDisk, Google Docs, and Dropbox. Very cool.

There's certainly no shortage when it comes to iPhone apps that turn your device into a pocket-sized scanner. At various times, TUAW bloggers have reviewed or discussed Readdle ScannerPro [US$6.99 (currently on sale for US$4.99), iTunes Link], DocScanner [US$8.99, iTunes Link], and JotNot [US$4.99, iTunes Link]. Of course, there is also a flock of business card scanners, but what I'm discussing in this post are the apps that say that they'll replace that flatbed scanner on your desk with a device you already have in your pocket or purse. MobiTech 3000 just released version 2.0 of the JotNot scanner app, and the update appears to be quite useful. I've owned the app for a while and have successfully used it to capture documents for posterity. The update provides a few additional features that I had been hoping for: In part of my quest towards more organization in my personal and business

Readdle released Scanner Pro for the iPhone early last month to much acclaim. The company’s scanner app was able to leapfrog the well established JotNot in the top paid business apps list in only a few days of availability thanks to its ease of use and myriad of features. The one feature that Scanner Pro was severely lacking, however, was the ability to save scans to the popular web service Evernote, but that is no longer the case in v1.1. Scanner Pro is the perfect app to use in those situations where you need to copy a document but just don’t have access to a regular scanner. It features the ability to scan multi-page documents and turn them into industry standards PDF files, which can then be shared via email, uploaded to MobileMe, Box.net, Humyo, or any other WebDAV compatible online storage solution, or even transferred to your computer by mounting

I took a look at JotNot Lite a little while ago and my conclusion was pretty ambiguous. I wasn’t totally sure of what the full feature of the app would offer over the Lite, aside from a ‘save scan’ button (you have to take a screenshot in Lite) and Evernote integration. Afterwards the developers graciously offered us a promo code so we could see the whole package, and I was pretty surprised how much more was included in the “real” JotNot. There are quite a few more switches, options, and a deeper integration with Evernote than I had initially anticipated. Same Same, But Different JotNot and its Lite cousin are essentially the same beast when it comes down to the actual “scanning” of an image. You can take a picture within the app or use one from your camera roll, and you still have to crop the section that you’d like

Readdle recently released another handy business app that transforms your iPhone into a portable document scanner, and although the App Store already contains apps of this nature, including the highly popular JotNot, Readdle’s Scanner Pro does a couple things that set it apart. Scanner Pro is perfect for those situations where you need to copy a document but don’t have access to a regular scanner. The app utilizes special algorithms to enhance image quality to make your captured files as legible as possible. It features the ability to scan multi-page documents and turn them into industry standard PDF files. Scanner Pro has a built-in PDF viewer as well, so you can preview all of your scans to ensure it was done properly. You can also password protect your PDF files if you so choose. The act of simply scanning files does you no good without the ability to share them, and

Scanner Pro (iTunes link) from Readdle transforms your iPhone into a portable PDF scanner. For US$6.99, you can combine pictures (chosen from your iPhone photo library, or taken using your iPhone's built-in camera) into a PDF document that you can e-mail or upload via WebDAV. That's a really useful concept, and if Readdle had delivered a user interface as strong and usable as its underlying idea, I'd recommend Scanner Pro as a must buy. Unfortunately, the application desperately needs the tender loving care of a user interface design expert. [For a different -- and much simpler -- UI approach to the same kind of task, you might check out the $2.99 JotNot.] The UI is cluttered and confusing. You're forced into unnecessary screens by a poorly designed work flow. Here's an example; once you scan a new page, the interface asks you to either go back or to process the image.

If you must know, the full name of the app is “JotNot Scanner Lite for Receipts, Whiteboards, and Documents”. It doesn’t roll off the tongue, but you definitely won’t wonder whether the app will work with whiteboards, documents, or receipts. The answer is right there! Now that I’m done being a jerk, I’ve gotta say I could really take a liking to this app if I could see some solid results. The idea is pretty fantastic: you can turn your iPhone pictures into “scans” via postprocessing done on the device. The cleaned up images should work really well for a database of receipts or documents – especially in conjunction with other services such as Evernote. The app can take its own picture or import one from you camera roll. Once that’s done, you just specify the portions of the picture that you’d like the app to process. The actual re-processing of

By – Need a digitized version of a document, but you don't have a flatbed scanner handy? If you've got an iPhone, you're in luck: the latest version of MobiTech 3000's JotNot is here to help. The US$4.99 app lets you snap a photo of anything with writing — a page from a book, a receipt slip, a whiteboard — then automagically enhances its readability. You don't even have to shoot the souce head-on — just tell JotNot where the edges of the document to convert are, and it does the rest. Version 1.3 of JotNot takes advantage of MobiTech's recent partnering with Evernote, a free online OCR service that converts and stores your enhanced document as easily-accessible text — even if the original is hand-written. Boy how I love Evernote. If you still haven’t tried it – you should! It is — and I can’t emphasize this enough — the best note taking tool out there. That said, I’m glad to see other companies realizing that, and integrating some of Evernote’s functionality into their own apps and services. In that sense, I’ve recently caught a press release from the company called MobiTech 3000, which announced Evernote integration into their document scanning application – JotNot. Wondering what’s JotNot? Here’s an excerpt from the press release: JotNot processes pictures of documents, receipts, whiteboards, blackboards, and handwritten notes, making them easier to read, print, and share with others. JotNot’s advanced image processing corrects keystoning and improves legibility. JotNot can export processed images as PDFs, PNGs, or JPEGs. Now, with the integration with Evernote, JotNot users will get the “full benefit of Evernote’s character and handwriting recognition applied to their

Version: v1.3
At first, I thought that's a nice app, but I don't need it. Well, I have found it to be indispesanble: photograph a white board at work, full of notes from a meeting. Don't worry about poor or uneven lighting, it will be cleaned up beautifully and quikly by JotNot. And then, sed it to Evernote and share it with others in my team. Wonderful.
Awesome, and constantly improving

Version: v1.3
Daily I am blown away by the app store. I have owned this for an hour and it is transforming the way I capture stuff. Evernote and JotNot.
Even cooler the little blue capture screen has symbols TR Top right. You can take the picture upside down and move the symbols around and like magic it fixes the thing. Best advice take the picture from at least 12 inches away in good light.
Just what I needed
Evernote Learner
Version: v1.3
Why does no one mention Evernote integration? This thing seamlessly sends receipts to my Evernote account into the appropriate notebook. From there I can print or send to my bookkeeper for processing. I used to carry receipts in my pocket, wallet or car until I could get them into the office for my secretary to scan and send off. No more! I just cropped about 3 steps from the process. iPhones rule! Evernote rules! Jotnot rocks them both.

Just made the app better. Thanks. Keep up the good work.
This app has not got a lot of features, but it does a good job at what it claims. I think that the developer could be more active, working on stuff to make it better etc. For those who complained, what did you expect? The thing does clean up/process the photo and make it useful etc. Just keep working on the app, making it better.

If you have a pre-3G S, this works well for large items you take from a distance: large paper sketches and whiteboards.
However, if you have a 3G S, the true power us unlocked. I use JotNot to scan receipts for all my expense reports.
The application has not been updated in 3 months and that is troubling. I hope the developers continue to support and improve thus wonderful application.

Version: 1.1
The app has limited usefulness, and due to iPhone camera limitations it can't make a silk purse from a sow's ear. Where I find by shines are in two uses:
1) snapping a picture of a whiteboard or flipchart(s) to save meeting minutes, I used to have to drag out my Canon TX1, now I just use my iPhone for legible shots. I can also easily e-mail them to attendees;
2) covert (or overt) document review. This App really shines when you take a non-optimal off-center shot of a document, the processing allows you to "square up" the trapezoidal-looking image, and actually read the text. I find it invaluable for taking pictures of documents on people's desks - while speaking to them - that I really shouldn't see, much less remember!
Quite useful, lacks refiltering
guniem
Version: 1.1
Nice for aligning reciepts and whiteboards and compensating a bit the poor camera quality with filters.
It really lacks a way to test different settings *after* processing the image once, without having to retake the picture and redefining the image boundaries.
Amazing

This is a real surprise. I couldn't believe how JotNot straightened and cleaned up the photo. I just wish it could save photos to it's own album instead of the default camera roll.

Version: 1.1
I boought JotNot 1.1 to scan receipts because I hate to carry around little bits of paper almost as much as I hate not getting reimbursed for business expenses. This app does exactly what it claims and its ability to create legible images of receipts and notes is truly impressive. This app more than pays for itself if you're like me and constantly mis-placing or losing taxi receipts.

Version: 1.1
Very useful app. Saved me a trip to Kinko's, because I was able to print to PDF and email the PDF to my accountant. The quality wasn't perfect, but it was pretty good for the iPhone camera, and good enough for my accountant to read.
Extremely Useful
M.M. Productions
Version: 1.1
This is a nice solid app that work just as described! I used to take pictures of my schesduals, reciepts, an papers just to refer back to them. This makes them all legible now. Well worth 99 cents. The only problem is the resolution of the iPhones camera. The app makes the pictures a little clearer then standard though.
Some things that would attract more people.
1) take use of the acelerometer when taking pictures so it can be very clear.
2) make image options pop up while viewing cut images. So you can see which option is best, rather then having to go through the process if the contrast/black and white doesn't work.
Overall still 5 stars.
Great job
Great for expenses

I use this to take photos of receipts i need for expense reports. Then I email them to myself. The phone I had before did a great job on receipts but the IPhone was not so good. This app did the trick. Well worth more then I paid.

This app was good before. After this update it's A LOT better. No more crashing, ever. Lots of new options to play with! I really like all the crazy photo effects I can make with this when I'm not using it for work. Works really well on my business card collection!
Good for notes
Monkey136
Version: 1.1
This works great for saving handwritten notes. Now I don't have to carry around my notebook to every meeting. I just take some blank sheets from a nearby printer to write down my thoughts and then JotNot the sheets to save them. I can also use it to capture whiteboards or flip charts. The best part is, I can then drop the notes into Evernote and I can then search for them.
Great product!

I recommend this to everyone wants a simple way to save white board notes and distribute them.
Great for saving expense tickets, etc.
Thanks for the update.
Black & white a good option.

I like the app. It does need an improved selection process and PDF support with FTP maybe?... Also, I don't want the originals saved, this should be an option. "scanning" reciepts with my Griffin Clarifi lens is pretty gratifying. I would recommend buying now, as the updates will only bring more usability and cost in the near future. As of now, it's a typical bare bones 1.0 app, but good.
Crashes like a mutha

Has potential but crashed all the time and images are mostly poor.
Looking forward to updates

Would be good if the user can adjust enhancement settings. Currently it is good for black and white documents but not for full colour magazine pages as they turn out too contrasty after the auto enhancement.
I don't like it

5 stars from 7 reviewers... really... developers/friends/family, please stop hyping up your own product. I give it 3 stars because they're off to a good start. It's far from the miracle they'd like you to believe it is. The interface is nice enough, but two gripes. First, you can't zoom the processed image in the app, so you're forced to save/exit/open photo app/zoom/delete/exit photo app/launch Jotnot/start over. Would be nice to zoom the image in the app to see if it's actually legible before saving. Then second, why bother saving the original? Just makes me have to go clear out my photo app later. Why would I bother using your app if I wanted the original? And if you take several shots from within the app, and then delete them before finding a 'keeper' (and it will take several attempts), all of those originals are in your photo app. Kind of messy.
most useful app ever

Version: 1.0
I ran into the developers in Cambridge just before they launched this on the app store. a brilliant concept and effectively executed. I've been taking pictures of whiteboards for years, but always needed to post-process them with higher contrast and brightness to make them useful. no more! Great app!
Best way to save receipts

JotNot is a great way to save receipts while I'm traveling--now I just take a picture rather than save the receipt.

Bad start

After installing the software I took a picture of a receipt. When trying to click on the upper left red circle to adjust the image I hit the Main button. (This happens a lot). If you do this there doesn't seem to be a way to get back to your photo, maybe import? I decided to take another photo and it froze the phone while the circle was spinning. I waited a few minutes then had to do a hard boot. At that point the phone would only work in emergency mode. I had to re-verify it with iTunes. I connected it and waited about 15 minutes and it was still verifying so I let it go. The phone finally was verified or restored but I don't know how long it took.
Very Cool and Useful App

I have already used this app multiple times around our office to digitize receipts, faxes, business cards, etc. I am amazed at how readable the processed images are and how easy the app is to use. Worth every penny...

This is a sweet little app if you're like me and you tend to draw a ton of notes on your whiteboard. Now I can actually save my ideas. Highly recommended.
Wonderful Application!
