There are many people right now who received an iPhone or iPod Touch for Christmas this year. Many of them may or may not yet know their way around iOS, the operating system that those iDevices run on. Most essential, to begin with, are the Apps. You’ve all heard the old catchphrase “There’s an App for that.” Well, that’s because there often is. Let’s take a look at some the essential free iPhone Apps (or iPad and iPod Touch). Please note that the App descriptions are as they appear on the App Store: AOL Radio powered by CBS Radio features over 350+ free stations spanning dozens of music genres, including pop, urban, country, indie, jazz, oldies and rock. Also choose from over 150+ popular terrestrial stations across the United States from CBS Radio including The World Famous KROQ, WXRT, 1010 WINS AM, The Fan, 92.3 Now FM and more. Now with

With all the utilities and useful tools found on the App Store it’s hard to know what’s useful and what’s just digital junk. We’ve put together a short list or our favorites just to make it a bit easier for you to find some stuff that you may actually like. Some of these Apps are practical (remote), others are things we ourselves use everyday (iTeleport) and others are just fun little Apps that we enjoy from time to time (App Stream). Why not take a look at our list of Best App Store Utilities of 2010? iTeleport is a pricey little App, but we love the heck out of it. It gives you VNC access from your iPad to your computer. In English, that means it lets you control your computer (seeing the desktop and everything on your iPad) remotely on the iPad screen. It takes a little bit of getting

Having an iPhone is nice and all, but calling isn’t always free. Then there are those with other iOS devices, such as the iPad and the iPod Touch, both of those devices can be made into a phone if you’d like, thanks to some great VOIP apps that make free calling possible. Have a look at the currently-available Apps that allow you to make VOIP calls on your iOS device: 1) Viber – Free Phone Calls This a cool little App that’s popular right now. Viber doesn’t require you to create an account, doesn’t need you to create a username or hand over a credit card number. The only catch is that to call someone, they must also have Viber. It creates an identity with your current number and only uses your minutes if the other user doesn’t happen to have the App. Other highlights include the fact that it doesn’t

Voice over IP is a service that uses the internet to hold conversations as opposed to cellphone signals. The service is poised to take over the mobile industry and replace the current cellphone system. iCall Free VoIP is an app that is trying to take that transition and add it to the iPhone. The app operates on a subscription-based plan which really is very cheap. It allows you to make calls over 3G or Wifi to everyone in your contacts list for free if you are willing to put up with limited features and the occasional ad. The premium package adds features such as call switching from cell to 3g, infinite call time and much more. To try it out, I called my friend Jake and held a short conversation with him. The call quality was definitely not as high as my normal experience but one thing that made a huge

It's been nearly a week now since Apple lifted the restrictions against using VoIP over 3G to place calls on the iPhone. Within hours of the withdrawal of restrictions, iCall [iTunes Link] and fring [iTunes Link] both updated their backend to allow users to place calls over a 3G connection. In neither case was it even necessary to download an updated version of the app from the App Store; both iCall and fring basically just "flipped a switch" behind the scenes that allowed VoIP over 3G. After almost a week, neither app has been pulled from the App Store, so it seems VoIP over 3G is here to stay. What about Skype? Skype is apparently "awaiting clarification" from Apple. They want to make sure the updated terms of the iPhone OS 3.2 SDK also apply to the 3.12 SDK before they submit an update. This caution from Skype is somewhat puzzling

Fring has jumped in line right behind to unveil VoIP calling for iPhone over 3G. There's no update required to the app, simply launch Fring and you're good to go. Fring is a voice and chat app that supports Skype, SIP, and video calls calls over 3G. You can select Skype from Fring's list of add-ons. "Now iPhone fring users can call, video call, chat and more for FREE over 3G and wifi!" Fring wrote on their blog. Video calls are one-way-only. You can see callers through their Webcams, but they won't see you. The Fring app is not providing iPhone-to-iPhone video calling. It would make sense that the native Skype app should be following close behind, but there's currently no word on how soon the company will open up calling over 3G. The Skype app for iPhone was updated last on January 15th. Fring can be from the App Store

While the various news outlets of the web may have gotten readers a bit too ecstatic when hyping out the iPhone 5, truth is, there was no iPhone 5 come Apple’s annual press conference. One source says that next year’s iPhone, unofficially and presumably dubbed iPhone 5, will be a It seems that Apple decided to go ahead and give the go to iOS 5.0.1 earlier than we had initially thought. Releasing today, the update brings along multiple new minor features, the most significant, however, being the highly anticipated iPhone 4S battery patch. You’ll first dive into Junk Jack without a clue of what you’re supposed to be doing – running around, tapping on random blocks. Then when night falls, the monsters devour you, and by this time you’re frustrated. In all of the hullabaloo over it the iPad, a long-awaited change to the iPhone got lost in the shuffle: Apple has taken the wraps off VoIP calls over the 3G network. That could mean a potentially huge savings on domestic and foreign calls. The reason is VoIP calls use data minutes rather than voice minutes. That means that you could buy a plan with minimal number of minutes — fewer than you actually use — as long as you have an unlimited data plan. Then you could make as many calls as you want over data. The first VoIP product up and running on the iPhone is iCall, a free app that gives you three ways to pay for calls. You can sign up for free calls to the United States and Canada that require you to listen to an ad before your call is made. Calls are limited to

Apple has apparently lifted its ban on VOIP over 3G on the iPhone. Very good news for apps like Skype and many others offering VOIP calling iPhone apps. In fact, there are already a couple offering support for this. iCall “ whose icon I have mangled for the above screencap “ is one and Acrobits Softphone, which Josh will have further details on soon. Here ‘s hoping this is just the first of several long-awaited changes to the iPhone OS “ I ‘m really hopeful that we ‘ll see some support for multitasking (even if only on the 3GS) and better home screen / apps organizing coming soon in a 3.2 or 4.0 update.

AT&T has amended the terms of use for the iPhone and now allows Apple has apparently updated its iPhone SDK to allow VoIP applications to run over 3G data networks. Previously, VoIP applications were only approved for sale in the App Store if they were limited to Wi-Fi. The developers of the iCall VoIP application for iPhone issued a press release yesterday that they have the first VoIP over 3G app for the iPhone. Apple Computer, Inc. has updated the iPhone developer SDK to allow VoIP over cellular networks. iCall is the first and only VoIP application that functions on the iPhone and iPod Touch over cellular 3G networks. iCall CEO Arlo Gilbert is quoted as saying, “I applaud Apple’s decision to allow iCall to extend its functionality beyond Wi-Fi and onto the 3G networks. This heralds a new era for VoIP applications on mobile platforms, especially for iCall and our free

Yesterday's iPad launch continues to dominate the tech news today. Besides announcing the iPad, however, Apple also quietly announced a major change to its iPhone policies yesterday: Apple now allows developers to use a 3G connection to make VoIP calls. The first application to make use of this is iCall (iTunes link), but chances are that Skype, Truphone and other VoIP providers are already working on updated iPhone apps as well. Until now, Apple's iPhone SDK prohibited developers from developing VoIP-enabled apps that used the carrier's 3G network. Developers who wanted to use VoIP in their apps had to restrict themselves to using this feature over Wi-Fi connections only. This restriction was purely Apple's decision. AT&T had already lifted its own ban on VoIP apps over 3G last October. Back then, Skype's CEO, Josh Silverman, praised AT&T for this move and called it "the right step for AT&T, Apple, millions of

By Rene Ritchie, Thursday, Jan 28, 2010 | VoIP over 3G apps for iPhone are now beginning to show up in the iTunes App Store. After AT&T said they would allow VoIP over 3G, all that remained was for Apple to follow through with an amended SDK, and that happened with iPhone 3.2 SDK for iPad. So far iCall Free VoIP [Free - iTunes link] and Fring [Free - iTunes link] We’re not seeing the monster in the space, Skype over 3G yet, but we’re willing to bet that’s incoming. We’re also happy to see that the iPad is indeed pushing things along for the iPhone as well, and we’re wondering if this means we’ll have VoIP over 3G to go along with those new AT&T iPad data plans they announced yesterday? If you try out VoIP over 3G on your iPhone let us know how it works for you!

The news is coming by way of a press release, but clearly lets us know that Apple has removed the once silly limitation that prevented app developers from allowing users to make VoIP calls using the 3G network. “Apple Computer, Inc. has updated the iPhone developer SDK to allow VoIP over cellular networks.” This will be an interesting change to watch. To begin with, the iPad with Wi-Fi + 3G will be able to make VoIP calls. Not to mention existing apps like Skype will be able to finally offer an updated release of the app that will allow 3G calling. In other words, Apple has removed another reason that many have jailbroken for in the past. Of course, as you would expect with a change like this. The VoIP apps are going to change, and one such app that was quick to make their change know is called iCall (App

It appears Apple has officially lifted their ban on apps that make VoIP calls over 3G! Just as they leaked the iPhone 3.2 OS to Devs, they also approve an update to an app called iCall. iCall for the iPhone & iPod is a new product that lets you make and receive free (or low-cost) phone calls anywhere you have a 3G or WiFi access. The application, dubbed iCall, is the only one in the Apple App Store at this current moment that can allow for VoIP over 3G connections. Apples newly announced iPad will be able to run AppStore Apps, have 3G Capability, Wi-Fi, a microphone, and speaker. Seems like an efficient set of hardware to make 3G VoiP calls to me. If this is the case, use iPhone users can pretty much say we have iPad Nanos. With iCall now being available, it's only conceivable that the iPad may

Apple has just officially lifted the ban for apps to make VoIP calls over 3G! With all this iPad fuss, the timing for such a change is a little bit troubling, but I guess we shouldn’t complain. Anyway, only minutes after updating the SDK, Apple has in the movement also approved its very first 3G VoIP app. It’s actually an update of iCall and it’s available now. On a further note, since the app is fully compatible with the iPad, it can be used as a phone.

With all the hype around Apple's release of the iPad, other big Apple announcements have slipped by without the attention they deserve. For example, Apple's updated iPhone SDK allows VoIP calls over 3G. That's a pretty big deal for Skype users, who can now use VoIP like a regular phone, without being tethered to areas with wifi coverage. It doesn't work for me on the latest version of Skype, but I'd be willing to be an update is already in the pipeline. AT&T made the changes that would allow iPhone VoIP on its 3G network back in October, so the holdup has presumably been on Apple's end since then. Now that Apple has lifted its restrictions, though, does this mean the iPad with 3G service will be able to pull off VoIP calls? I sure hope so. It would be nice to have just an iPad, instead of carting around an

By Rene Ritchie, Thursday, Jan 28, 2010 | MacRumors is reporting that the new iPhone 3.2 SDK, now available via developer.apple.com, but (currently?) only supporting the just-announced iPad, brings a couple interesting new features to the table tablet. In addition, MacRumors says iCall Free VoIP [Free - iTunes link] has told them: With the latest revisions Apple has made to the iPhone developer agreement and Software Development Kit, iCall for the iPhone and iPod Touch now enabled unrestricted free local and long distance calling over 3G data networks. Finally (for now), 9to5mac shows that while the demo iPad only had 4 apps in its dock, like the iPhone, the SDK simulator has room for 6. Makes sense given the extra width. (Pictures above) We’d wondered what happened with VoIP over 3G. Will iPhone 3.2 be the answer?

It's been a long time coming, but the last hurdle is gone -- Apple has lifted the restrictions against 3G VoiP calls from the iPhone Software Development Kit. The implications of this are pretty huge. Not only does this mean that VoIP apps like Skype [iTunes Link] can now be easily updated to allow VoIP access over 3G on the iPhone, it also means that the 3G-enabled versions of the new iPad should be able to take full advantage of VoIP over 3G as well. The iPad does come with a microphone and a speaker, so while you won't be able to hold the device up to your ear like a phone (although it would be pretty funny to watch you try), calls over Skype or another VoIP program should theoretically be just as clear on the iPad as they are on the iPhone's tiny speaker. This has the potential to

Keep in mind that iCall has a Better Business Bureau rating of F. This is scary when it comes to submitting your credit card info and getting issues resolved.
I don't feel iCall VoIP should be free; however, I struggle with $9.99 a month. With the Skype app now available, it only costs me $36.00 a year for unlimited calls vs. $120.00 with iCall. I mainly use VoIP for outbound calls, so Skype is a better/cheaper solution at this point. I do like the iCall app and think the idea behind the service is great, but I will delete the app and cancel services until the monthly rate drops.
I noticed some people having trouble with getting an answer from iCall support on how to cancel account. I received an email with instructions which seems to have worked: while in the iCall app, touch the "settings tab," then touch "support," then "cancel subscription."
I want Icall too, Just not this crap

Even with the new version, you cannot call any numbers with full standard formatting ( +1 (xxx) xxx-xxxx). It immediately gives you a "Call Ended," I'm guessing is that iCall believes you are trying to call internationally.

How do you screw up this bad this fast? Don't waste your time with the fake 'free' trial. Read the reviews. They can have the one star for the planted marketing reviews - entertaining, you can't miss'em. We should have known – big brothers Apple and AT&T would never have let this app see the light of day if it really did what we all hoped it would.

One word to describe iCall as a whole: awful. The app is subpar, their customer support is abysmal, their business practices are shady and although the company is in its infacy, they treat their facebook "fans" as if they somehow didn't need business.
I would give zero stars but Apple feels bad for developers like this. AVOID!

There's a bit of static on the other end, but I'm sure this will be ironed out- this is a fresh release! Call connection is much quicker than AT&T's. I've already used it for a couple of good long calls. I like the pay as you go option, until AT&T comes out with the 3G microcells and I can fully weigh my options. When iPhone 3.0 comes out this will be an even better solution. Well done!

It's a nice interface, I'll give it that. And of course, for those of us who don't have a clean cellular connection, this is a great work-around. Some things irritated me right off the bat though. For starters, I called a friend immediately, and my caller I.D. came up as an iCall number and then listed a "646" area code that wasn't mine. This could pose a problem for those who have friends who screen their calls - you'll more than likely get forwarded to VM by your friends.

i've been waiting for this app ever since it was first demoed back in June 2008. the basic premise is it uses your WiFi signals to make/receive calls and can even switch current calls from the carrier to WiFi. I practically never have service where I live, so this is perfect. Currently, it says signups won't start until March 25, so we'll see soon if this works well. The app may be free, but if you want unlimited calls and a personal number for people to call you direct on, than there is a $10/month Total Access package as well as a pay-as-you-go model.
