How-To: Use a smartphone to save some cash on your next trip
Mini_discussion_bubble IntoMobile - Posted Wed, 27 Jul 2011 11:25:53 UTC +00:00
A smartphone is a powerful tool you should use on every trip, if nothing to save some cash along the way. In addition to the must-have navigation apps and local guides from the likes of Lonely Planet, there are other applications that could help you save money while travelling. Here are the apps we suggest you to try out on your next trip: Groupon You’ve probably heard about Groupon and may have also used it. The daily deals service is getting more and more users every day, despite facing a tough competition from the likes of Facebook and Google, with Nokia and Microsoft planning to join the race, too. Their mobile application is available for multiple platforms, including iOS, Android, BlackBerry, and they also have a mobile website for users of other mobile devices. To take advantage of Groupon, simply sign-up for the local version of the service (your travel destination) Read More
fring releases iPad app with video calling
Mini_discussion_bubble TUAW - The Unofficial Apple Weblog - Posted Mon, 27 Jun 2011 21:00:00 UTC +00:00
fring has released Video Calls + IM for iPad (free), offering video calling to eager customers. The app is the first free video call app for the iPad to offer group calling (Cisco's WebEx offers group video calls via iPad but is enterprise software and priced as such), with support for up to four simultaneous participants. Video Calls + IM for iPad is platform-agnostic like a good global citizen (for the most part), and lets users chat with friends on iPads, iPod touches, iPhones and compatible Android and Nokia devices. Plus, it works over Wi-Fi, 3G and 4G. So no "Wi-Fi Blues" with fring Video Calls + IM for iPad. Finally, the app lets you send (free) instant messages to other devices, as the name indicates. The fring UI looks nice, as does the functionality. Add conference attendees with a drag-and-drop, while shiny, candy-like buttons welcome those with poor aim. Download Read More
Using smartphone for travel
Mini_discussion_bubble IntoMobile - Posted Tue, 14 Jun 2011 09:52:05 UTC +00:00
A smartphone is a great companion for every trip. There are a number of apps that can make your travel easier, whether it’s about finding a place to stay, monuments and historical sights to see, or learning more about the city/place you’re visiting… there’s (usually) an app for that. Here are some apps I’ve found useful in my travels. Please note that I’m linking to iOS apps and that not all of them are available on other platforms. The point is to get the idea which apps to use for what purpose, to better plan and ultimately enjoy your trip. Let’s start with the flight search… Flight search Pretty much every major airline now has its iPhone app. Moreover, some companies support Android and BlackBerry whereas some others are experimenting with newer platforms like Windows Phone 7. Fring closes C round of financing
Mini_discussion_bubble IntoMobile - Posted Fri, 27 May 2011 07:50:55 UTC +00:00
Fring, the company behind the popular mobile VoIP (where V is both for voice and video) app, announced that it has closed C-round of financing. The company’s current investors participated, including North Bridge Venture Capital, Pitango Venture Capital and Veritas Venture Partners. Fring will use the new money to additionally invest in technology and bring its video communication suite to new devices. Commenting on the news, Fring’s Co-Founder & CEO Avi Shechter said: “With the additional fuel injection from our visionary industry investors, in addition to our independent revenue streams, fring will re-double the rate at which we make fun, new ways we can all communicate, across any mobile platform.” Those unfamiliar should know that Fring offers free mobile Group Video calls, Video calls, calls and live chat on all major smartphones. Group video chat coming to iPhone via fring
Mini_discussion_bubble TUAW - The Unofficial Apple Weblog - Posted Wed, 06 Apr 2011 04:45:00 UTC +00:00
fring is working on a group video chat implementation for its iOS and Android apps. The update will eventually allow users to chat with up to four participants on-screen at once; fring's developers are allowing users to sign up for a beta version so that they can test it out before it's officially available on the App Store. Group video chats appear to be a bit choppy even in fring's announcement video (which you can view on the next page), but that could be due to any number of factors from the connection speed to the iPhone 4's processor. Thanks to Photo Booth, we already know the iPad 2 with its faster A5 processor can display multiple video streams at once without a hitch, so it'll be interesting to see whether the same is true for apps like fring. fring offered video chatting long before Skype's iOS app enabled it (and Read More
Verbs for iPhone – There’s Finally An IM App That Apple Would Be Proud Of
Mini_discussion_bubble iPhone Download Blog - Posted Sun, 23 Jan 2011 16:00:42 UTC +00:00
There’s a new iPhone IM client on the block. Verbs, by #include tech software, is a simple and beautiful IM app that looks like it was designed by Apple itself. There are a ton of IM apps on the App Store (IM+, BeejiveIM, fring, AIM and Yahoo! Messenger to name a few).  I’ve used many, and honestly, most of them look pretty awful. I was so excited when I saw the Verbs design mockups several months ago, and the app recently received an update in the App Store that makes it definitely worth reviewing. While I’m not someone who constantly relies on instant messaging to communicate, I do see the benefit of having a solid IM app on the iPhone for occasionally hopping on Google Talk. The good thing is that Verbs has more to offer than just good looks… While the interface design of Verbs is stunning, it also packs some interesting surprises under the hood. Verbs Read More
6 Great VOIP Apps for iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch
Mini_discussion_bubble iSmashPhone - Posted Thu, 09 Dec 2010 15:01:05 UTC +00:00
Having an iPhone is nice and all, but calling isn’t always free. Then there are those with other iOS devices, such as the iPad and the iPod Touch, both of those devices can be made into a phone if you’d like, thanks to some great VOIP apps that make free calling possible. Have a look at the currently-available Apps that allow you to make VOIP calls on your iOS device: 1) Viber – Free Phone Calls This a cool little App that’s popular right now. Viber doesn’t require you to create an account, doesn’t need you to create a username or hand over a credit card number. The only catch is that to call someone, they must also have Viber. It creates an identity with your current number and only uses your minutes if the other user doesn’t happen to have the App. Other highlights include the fact that it doesn’t Read More

FaceTime Challengers Now Include Yahoo

Posted 10/08/2010 at 4:29am | by J.R. Bookwalter Back in June, Apple spent a great deal of hoopla touting the new FaceTime feature of the iPhone 4 -- but the market for video chat is heating up quickly, and now Yahoo has lined up to be the next contender in the App Store as well as on Android devices. Reuters is reporting that Yahoo is planning to update its popular Yahoo Messenger app to enable built-in video calling, according to the company’s vice-president of mobile for the Americas, David Katz. Yahoo’s video chat will be available as a free app for both the iPhone as well as Android devices. Yahoo is clearly taking aim at Apple’s new FaceTime, which is already being challenged by rivals such as fring and the recently released Tango -- although neither of those companies have the brand recognition of Yahoo. No iPhone 4? FaceTime Alternatives for the Rest of Us
Mini_discussion_bubble Mac|Life - Posted Wed, 14 Jul 2010 19:10:53 UTC +00:00
Posted 07/14/2010 at 11:10am | by J.R. Bookwalter There’s no doubt that Apple’s new iPhone 4-only FaceTime feature is great, and the company is letting everyone know about it with an avalanche of new television commercials. But whether you’re stuck on an older iPhone or you don’t have any iPhone 4-toting friends to video chat with, there are thankfully some free App Store alternatives to FaceTime--if you know where to look. Oh, and did we mention these are all free? fring The app that most closely resembles the functionality of FaceTime is fring. Developer fringland Ltd. was the first to bring one-way video calls to the iPhone in a previous version, allowing at least computer users with webcams to be seen on the handset. Thanks to an update last week, free two-way video calls have now been added to the mix, and they actually one-up FaceTime by allowing such calls over Read More

Fring Takes on FaceTime with iPhone, Android App | News & Opinion | PCMag.com
Fring on Thursday released an updated version of its mobile app that will allow for two-way video calling over 3G and Wi-Fi on iPhone, Android, or Symbian devices, including Apple's latest iPhone 4. The app also now supports multi-tasking, includes a social stream of Facebook, Twitter, and IM sessions, and has a smarter address books that merges buddy and contact lists. A major addition to the iPhone 4 is the FaceTime video-calling app. For now, however, it only works between two iPhone 4 users and only over Wi-Fi. Now, iPhone 4 users who download the free Fring app will be able to activate video calling with non-iPhone 4 users on a 3G network, according to Fring. "We are thrilled to bring iPhone users unrestricted video calling with all their friends and family. Ever since we launched the world's first mobile video calling last year, we see millions of users thirsty to Read More
Fring Adds 3G Video Calling to iPhone 4, Android, and Nokia Phones
Mini_discussion_bubble Social Media News and Web Tips – Mashable – The Social Media Guide - Posted Fri, 09 Jul 2010 00:00:00 UTC +00:00
by Popular mobile VoIP and chat client Fring has updated its mobile app to add support for 2-way video calling for the iPhone 4. You might be brushing off this feature because the new iPhone has FaceTime, but the Fring app has two big advantages over Apple’s video calling feature: 3G support and compatibility across multiple platforms. Fring launched video calls on iPhone last year, giving iPhone 3GS users a simple way to make calls, although 2-way video calling wasn’t possible because the 3GS didn’t have a front-facing camera. Earlier this year, the company brought 3G video calling to market. Today’s update finally makes Fring compatible with 2-way video calling on the iPhone 4. While it’s easier to initiate or receive a FaceTime call, the company is betting that people will use Fring because it allows them to call friends without an iPhone 4 — one of the big restrictions to Read More

iPhone fring App Brings 3G Video Calls, Even for Skype
Mini_discussion_bubble Mac|Life - Posted Fri, 09 Jul 2010 12:32:44 UTC +00:00
Posted 07/09/2010 at 4:32am | by J.R. Bookwalter (Image courtesy of Gizmodo) The groovy folks at fringland Ltd. have done it again: They were the first to include incoming video chat -- even through Skype -- with their popular, free fring app, and now they’ve leveraged the front-facing camera on the iPhone 4 to do the same with two-way video calls, even over 3G. Take that, FaceTime! Gizmodo is reporting that two-way video calls over Wi-Fi or 3G is here, and it doesn’t require the (for now) iPhone 4-only FaceTime. fring is a popular free app for staying in touch with friends through their own service as well as a host of others, including Skype, MSN Messenger, GoogleTalk, AIM, Twitter and more. After blazing their own trail with incoming video for fring or Skype calls with a previous version, the developer has kicked things up several notches by adding two-way video Read More
Fring update gets approved, now with front camera video calling over 3G
Mini_discussion_bubble iPhoneFreak - Posted Fri, 09 Jul 2010 13:01:39 UTC +00:00
A new version of Fring has been approved for entry in the App Store. This update brings the app up to version 3.2.0.5, but perhaps most important is what is now possible — two-way video calling using the front camera and a 3G connection. Of course, it should go without saying that using the front camera requires the user to be on an iPhone 4. Other new features and additions in this latest version of Fring includes multitasking, a smarter address book and a new social stream. For the most part these last improvements should be able to be understood without further explanation such as multitasking and the address book. In terms of the social stream, that is noted as offering “a chronological stream of all tweets, facebook updates, chats and calls, all in one place!” Otherwise, one of the nice parts about this update is how you will be able Read More

Disponible: App Store Precio: Gratis Read More

Wi-Fi Edition: Can An iPad Replace Your iPhone?

That got us thinking: What would it be like to spend a day with only the iPad? With that challenge in mind, we (mostly) stuck our trusty iPhone 3GS away for a full day and “made do” with only the Wi-Fi model of iPad. As it turns out, it’s not as difficult as you might expect. We have yet to find any iPhone apps that don’t also run on the iPad -- even seemingly more complex ones such as SlingPlayer Mobile or Skype work just fine -- so most of the iPhone functionality can already be duplicated just by installing the same apps you already use. It's been nearly a week now since Apple lifted the restrictions against using VoIP over 3G to place calls on the iPhone. Within hours of the withdrawal of restrictions, iCall [iTunes Link] and fring [iTunes Link] both updated their backend to allow users to place calls over a 3G connection. In neither case was it even necessary to download an updated version of the app from the App Store; both iCall and fring basically just "flipped a switch" behind the scenes that allowed VoIP over 3G. After almost a week, neither app has been pulled from the App Store, so it seems VoIP over 3G is here to stay. What about Skype? Skype is apparently "awaiting clarification" from Apple. They want to make sure the updated terms of the iPhone OS 3.2 SDK also apply to the 3.12 SDK before they submit an update. This caution from Skype is somewhat puzzling Read More

Fring App Debuts Skype Calls Over iPhone 3G
Mini_discussion_bubble iPhone Savior - Posted Fri, 29 Jan 2010 07:45:47 UTC +00:00
Fring has jumped in line right behind to unveil VoIP calling for iPhone over 3G. There's no update required to the app, simply launch Fring and you're good to go. Fring is a voice and chat app that supports Skype, SIP, and video calls calls over 3G. You can select Skype from Fring's list of add-ons. "Now iPhone fring users can call, video call, chat and more for FREE over 3G and wifi!" Fring wrote on their blog. Video calls are one-way-only. You can see callers through their Webcams, but they won't see you. The Fring app is not providing iPhone-to-iPhone video calling. It would make sense that the native Skype app should be following close behind, but there's currently no word on how soon the company will open up calling over 3G. The Skype app for iPhone was updated last on January 15th. Fring can be from the App Store Read More

While the various news outlets of the web may have gotten readers a bit too ecstatic when hyping out the iPhone 5, truth is, there was no iPhone 5 come Apple’s annual press conference. One source says that next year’s iPhone, unofficially and presumably dubbed iPhone 5, will be a It seems that Apple decided to go ahead and give the go to iOS 5.0.1 earlier than we had initially thought. AT&T and Apple Allow Cheap VoIP Calls on 3G

In all of the hullabaloo over it the iPad, a long-awaited change to the iPhone got lost in the shuffle: Apple has taken the wraps off VoIP calls over the 3G network. That could mean a potentially huge savings on domestic and foreign calls. The reason is VoIP calls use data minutes rather than voice minutes. That means that you could buy a plan with minimal number of minutes — fewer than you actually use — as long as you have an unlimited data plan. Then you could make as many calls as you want over data. The first VoIP product up and running on the iPhone is iCall, a free app that gives you three ways to pay for calls. You can sign up for free calls to the United States and Canada that require you to listen to an ad before your call is made. Calls are limited to Read More
Apple opens gates to VoIP on 3G – Free voice calls for everyone!

Free voice calls, that is, as long as you have an and a VoIP app that lets you make internet voice calls over the 3G wireless data network. How is that possible, you ask? Well, Apple has apparently done an about face on their policy that prohibited VoIP apps from using a carrier’s wireless network to make free voice calls. Following AT&T’s decision to allow VoIP on its 3G network, Apple has opened the doors to a whole new world of VoIP calling, where iPhone users can make no-cost calls to other VoIP users from anywhere they please (as long as they have a decently strong signal). The implications of the move are huge – AT&T risks losing revenue from its wireless voice business if customers wholesale adopt 3G VoIP calling. For the customer, though, it doesn’t get any better than this. VoIP iPhone apps, like fring, have been available for Read More

By Rene Ritchie, Thursday, Jan 28, 2010 | VoIP over 3G apps for iPhone are now beginning to show up in the iTunes App Store. After AT&T said they would allow VoIP over 3G, all that remained was for Apple to follow through with an amended SDK, and that happened with iPhone 3.2 SDK for iPad. So far iCall Free VoIP [Free - iTunes link] and Fring [Free - iTunes link] We’re not seeing the monster in the space, Skype over 3G yet, but we’re willing to bet that’s incoming. We’re also happy to see that the iPad is indeed pushing things along for the iPhone as well, and we’re wondering if this means we’ll have VoIP over 3G to go along with those new AT&T iPad data plans they announced yesterday? App of the Week: Live Two-Way Video Calls
Mini_discussion_bubble NYTimes Gadgetwise Blog - Posted Mon, 07 Dec 2009 23:11:29 UTC +00:00
Every once in a while a bit of science fiction becomes reality. Two-way TV phones have been a staple of futuristic stories since the 1800s. Now Internet communication service Fring has made two-way video calls by cellphone possible, maybe even practical. Fring’s new video feature allows people with certain Nokia phones using the Symbian operating system to make video calls over the 3G data network, no Wi-Fi required. If you use one of the Nokia phones with a camera on the front, like the N97, you can experience the full effect, seeing the person you are speaking to live on your handset screen as they do the same. Other phones it works with include the Nokia X6, N97 mini, 5800, and N95. Downloads are available from the Nokia Ovi store, or from Fring. The app uses its own compression method to use minimum bandwidth, so it can work reliably even when Read More

Few days ago we talked about the brand new version of Fring for Symbian S60 which enabled Skype video calls. Now the company is bringing the same/similar functionality to the iPhone and iPod Touch users. The “similar” part comes from the fact that iPhone users can see the person they’re talking to, while the other way around doesn’t work, as iPhone lacks the front-facing camera. The new functionality is included with the latest version of Fring (3.0.0.4), which readily waits you at the AppStore. And before I let you go, check out a short demo video after the jump. Enjoy! Make Video Calls on your iPhone with Fring

Fring is a VoIP and chat client for your mobile phone. The service works with a handful of various networks, including Skype, AIM, MSN Messenger and Twitter. You can even make calls to landlines from your SkypeOut and SkypeIn account and place voice calls to your Skype and Fring address book. Today, Fring is taking its iPhone app to the next level by bringing support for video chat. Nokia added this feature to some of its devices last week, and the new version of Fring is now in the app store. Fring is free and you can grab it here (iTunes link). That means the iPhone/iPod Touch can now accept incoming Skype Video Calls! This can lead to a bunch of ways to monitor something as well. I wont lie, I've never really used Fring. iPhone only: Previously mentioned mobile VoIP and chat application Fring has updated their iPhone app with support for streaming video calls. It's a great feature, but it does have a catch. If you're unfamiliar with Fring, it's a messaging application that integrates with everything from Skype and Google Talk to Facebook and AIM. For most, the VoIP feature comes via Skype. With the new update, iPhone and iPod touch users with a Wi-Fi connection can make and receive video calls via Fring or Skype and watch your contact from your phone. Unfortunately the video chat is only a one-way video thing for now, meaning either you can watch your friend talk or your friend can watch you talk. This is, of course, a limitation of the iPhone and its non-front-facing camera. The folks at Fring assure us that two-way video calls will be available as soon as the iPhone gets a Read More
Video Calls Now Available On the iPhone [IPhone Apps]

Be happy, because video calls are now legally available on the iPhone. Be sad, because it's one way only, so you won't be able to flash your naughty bits. Fring—a free chat client for the iPhone that supports most standards—has been updated to support video conferencing on the iPhone, using Wi-Fi. It works on Fring to Fring, and Skype to Fring. Unfortunately, it's not bi-directional. You would be able to see whoever is calling you from a desktop, but you won't be able to transmit your image, even if you have the 3G videoconferencing kit. The reason is a physical one, according to the developer: The iPhone doesn't have a front camera, so you can't do face to face. Which begs the question once again: When in the name of all that is good and chromed is Apple going to update the iPhone with a front camera and iChat AV? Given Read More

fring, the free iPhone app that allows users to connect to multiple IM accounts at once, including Skype, has been updated today [iTunes Link]. fring now incorporates free video calls for fring-to-fring or fring-to-Skype chats. Before you get too excited, you should know that on the iPhone and iPod touch, video chatting is a one-way affair. Because the iPhone's camera is located on the back of the device, fring chose to enable only incoming video for the iPhone (and the iPod touch, of course, has no camera at all). So, people can send you video, but you can't send video to them. fring's application for certain Nokia devices does have two-way video calling, but iPhone and iPod touch users will have to wait for some future (and for now purely hypothetical) device with a front-facing camera before two-way video calling will be feasible. I tested the new video chatting feature using Read More

Posted 12/01/2009 at 6:49am | by J.R. Bookwalter Even before the launch of the original iPhone in 2007, rumors swirled in blogs and message boards that Apple might integrate a front-facing camera for video conferencing into the unit. It has yet to happen more than two years later, but that hasn’t stopped Israel-based fring from making at least one part of the puzzle a reality today. Of course, the iPhone 3GS camera (the only one officially capable of video recording) is on the back of the unit, making it difficult to use for video conferencing. Besides the fact that you won’t be able to properly frame yourself, you also won’t be able to see the other party you’re talking to. Hailed as a “world’s first,” fring’s solution (for now) is to stick with only incoming video streams — you can see the party you’re calling, but they can’t see you. This Read More

AT&T Clears The Way for VoIP Apps on iPhone

Omg I can't believe wat you all are talking about!!!! This app is wonderful! It's better than FaceTime I think! You can see if your friends online to see if you can video chat them! On FaceTime you never know when they're online! And you can't chat them to see if they're online! Fring is awesome! I recommend this to all

Problem proplem plbelm 5.0 stars Version: 5.4.4.1
This app is great a highly reccomended app
Cool idea, but doesn't work very well
Gordon142 2.0 stars Version: 1.0.1.4
Maybe one in 15 Skype calls actually go through, and they usually disconnect at some point during the call. Perfect wi-fi signal here, Skype from my mac works great.
Great backend!
Eumenhof 3.0 stars Version: 1.0.1.4
Worst ui possible for a im client. Pleeeease go look at pidgin for ideas. Then look at beejive. Pidgin has good grouping concepts. Beejive has better iphone concepts. Combine them and you gave a killer app. Love that its free. Youre almost there!
Frustrating to use
Kleinias 1.0 stars Version: 1.0.1.5
This app just doesn't work well with Skype (it is advertised as being compatible). I know that you must dial a "+1" (which is another odity), but 9/10 times, the application will just hang-up on me. It's a frustrating process to have to sign up with Fring and then sign up for a Skype account, only to not have the advertised features work properly. During the rare occasion that a skype connection actually goes through, you face a massive delay in the conversation. The delay is very pronounced, even when calling someone that lives only a few blocks away from me.
Adds an excellent feature to iPod Touch
MaestroJAL 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.2.4
VOIP works great with Fring on the iPod Touch with iPhone headphones. I added a Gizmo SIP account with a call in number and I can call out AND receive calls as long as I have Fring active and a WiFi connection. When I'm not connected, Gizmo sends my voicemail to my dedicated email address which allows me to play the messages via the iPod's Mail app. Not as good as having a cell phone, but it is cheaper. The quality of SIP is much better than Skype. For free, this can't be beat.
Incoming cell calls disconnects iPhone Fring calls
MacInfoSys.com 3.0 stars Version: 1.0.1.4
At this point using Fring on the iPhone is not really a worthwhile option unless you have NO cell signal and have WIFI. I have been testing using my SIP and Skype (Skype = having to add manually a +1 to all calls made from my contact list for it to work)
Doesn't run in the background!
Angryasmusic 3.0 stars Version: 1.0.1.4
I was waiting for this to come out! Glad to see it made it's way to the App Store. Personally, my main complaint is that fring doesn't keep you signed in when you have other things to do on your iPhone. It would make sense to have fring running in the background so that you can still receive IM's when you're not in the application; and have an 'exit' button when you want to sign out entirely. Hope to see this happen in the near future.
hmmm
it.is.not.funny 1.0 stars Version: 1.0.1.4
can not register, because my email include dots
Great but some issue exist
Onebulgar 2.0 stars Version: 1.0.1.4
Issue: Not all Skype users were recognized as "Not Available" and showed them as "Off-line"
Com'on now, no periods allowed in the email address field?
shunchu 1.0 stars Version: 1.0.1.4
Almost all my emails I use have a period in it before the @ symbol. But somehow this is a problem with fring's registration screen which constantly nags me about my email address not being in a valid format! What gives? Once they fix this bug and actually allows me to create an account with an email with a period in it, I will come back and revise my rating...
Finally
rudiki 4.0 stars Version: 1.0.1.4
Awesome and long awaited app. (waited for more than 1 year). Needs some work though, skypeout calls fail even when wifi connection is great and buddy list is messy, needs a grouping feature.
BB Curve's Headset works on Ipod Touch 2g
kanshu 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.1.4
My Blackberry Curve's headset and mic combo works with this app on my Ipod Touch 2g. woot!
Fring Hijacked my SIP account and made 600+ phone calls
Chaz Mangus 1.0 stars Version: 1.0.1.4
I have tracked this all down to be a problem with Fring i installed this app made a few phone calls using my Sip account next thing i know someone has used my account to make 600 + phone calls to Texas running some Orange County Savings Scam i never used an open wireless network so the problem has to be on there end must be one of there servers has been hacked or something. until i found out this i was loving the app but i don't trust it anymore...
SkypeOut Delay
milklee 3.0 stars Version: 1.0.1.4
I just download it today (10/3/08), and I am trying to use it with skypeout
It works!
dsstroud 4.0 stars Version: 1.0.1.4
Man I am loving this application. It seems to be working well. To the person that said their skype out call was failing, it was doing that with mine, but when I dialed the full number with the + sign, that did the trick. You have to dial out like you do with skype, not like you do on your cell phone. It even rings for skype in call. This is the perfect app if you travel and have access to wifi. I give it 4 stars as a first effort. Things I would like to see is ability to check skype voicemail and I would like to be able to use my bluetooth headset, though that might be a limitation imposed by apple.
Awesome
R^2 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.1.4
For all those people who have skype problem with fring. Let the application be open for 5 min. For phone contact calling using skype remember to put country code. Gtalk iphone to PC voip is pretty good in quality. It's a great free package.
Great app!!
Mizilan 4.0 stars Version: 1.0.1.4
Thanks for making fring available in the legit app store! The call quality is great, interface is easy to use, and excellent support for skype/gchat/and the rest.
Promising but not quite there
Texas Rocker 1.0 stars Version: 1.0.2.4
Test called people around the US on both cell phones and land lines and all report not being able to hear my voice clearly. There is a distortion and compression on voices and a couple of calls experienced severe latency characteristics. Hopefully they will get these issues ironed out soon! A good start, but not ready for primetime.
Skypeout doesn't work
thekingb 1.0 stars Version: 1.0.1.4
I've tried every combination of ways to make a skypeout call - +s, 1, 001, etc -and nothing works. Calls terminate immediately. I love the concept but that's pretty sad. How did this app make it into the wild with such a major bug?
Great
Kalima BG 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.1.4
Great app, finally there is a Skype for iPhone. I'm still waithing for the official Skype app though...Come on Skype....
Cute but...
Whatwhat08 3.0 stars Version: 1.0.1.4
Wayy too unorganized for me.
Can't make calls with skype
Dasonic2 1.0 stars Version: 1.0.1.4
I have unlimmited calls to US and Canada. But can't make calls with this app.
Good integration, but VOIP needs work
ndgunner 3.0 stars Version: 1.0.1.5
While you can make calls using SkypeOut, etc, it's cannot be used with teleconferencing numbers. Once you dial a number and press "Call", you cannot get back to the keypad to enter additional tones (work voicemail, dial by name, teleconferencing, etc). If you go back to start a new call, you no longer have an "END" button that you can access to terminate the call you are on. I think it's a good start, but needs some work.
Beware of "Sponsored" Messages
Machaira 2.0 stars Version: 1.0.1.4
I just downloaded this app yesterday. Today, I used it to contact my boss via MSN, and it started sending him random messages like, "This service sponsored by Fring", and "You can use this service for free too" (that one isn't a direct quote; but captures the essence). The ad messages would get tacked on to the end of my IMs, separated by carriage returns. Unfortunately, the line feeds would push my IM off the screen. My boss had to scroll up to see what I wrote. Meanwhile, I have no idea this is happening since Fring doesn't bother to notify me about it. The only reason I found out was because my boss said, "Hello Fring", and I thought, "How the hell does he know I'm using Fring?" That's when he said, "Your service is spamming me." This app may have some great features, as many other reviews indicate; but sending unsolicited spam IMs without notifying the sender is poor business and extremely unprofessional. I apologized to my boss when I got in for the incident. I shouldn't have to do that because of an IM client.
We should ask for Voip using Edge or 3G
wax0 4.0 stars Version: 1.0.1.4
We are paying AT&T 30$ per month for unlimited internet access, so, we should be able to use our internet acces for Voip too, this AT&T policy of banning this, is not fair and we should fight with them, they are getting our money for "unlimited internet" but they are actually limiting it, I am really disappointed with AT&T unfair practice, please lets do something, to make them respect our rights to use our internet connection as we wish.....
Good app, but a few bugs
reindeerhelmet 4.0 stars Version: 1.0.1.4
Fring is a great app. I finally have a way to get in touch with Skype contacts on my phone.
Using Skype on the 3g iPhone
Seto925 4.0 stars Version: 1.0.1.4
I was very excited when Fring was finally made available on the app store. I had a lot of problems getting this thing to work for the first time so here are a few tips to make set up and use a little easier:
