If there was a list of things that I never expected to be talking about today, [ Free ] getting an update would probably be right near the top. But that’s just what has happened as MachineWorks has issued a new update for 3D Realms' classic first-person shooter that looks to address the long-derided virtual controls in the game. For a quick backstory, Duke Nukem 3D launched in the App Store way back in August of 2009. Id Software’s Wolfenstein 3D [$1.99 / Free ] had hit iOS several months earlier and received critical acclaim, mostly centered around how well their controls worked. With a Doom [ $4.99 ] iOS port also on the horizon, having Duke Nukem on my iPhone seemed like the greatest news in history for a long-time FPS fan like me. However, the initial version of Duke had possibly the worst controls I’ve ever encountered. I mean

I love the App Store. On a single platform, I can draw from a well of my favorite classics like Doom [ $4.99 ], and try out thousands games like N.O.V.A. 3 [ $6.99 ] that take their inspiration from popular console and PC games but offer an experience tailor-made for tablets and smartphones. But what I enjoy most about the App Store is the chance to drop a buck or two on quirky titles you don't see on any other platform. Take Rocket Fox [ Free ], for example, a new puzzle/platformer game starring a fox named Guy who loves fireworks. He loves them so much that he's not content to admire them from afar like your average Fourth-of-July party-goer. No, Guy likes to hop aboard rockets before they blast off and ride them skyward. Of course, what goes up must come down, and that's where you come in. Each

posted by Trey Trawick on Thursday, September 8, 2011 at 9:29 pm. id Software has open sourced the code for their iOS titles and If you’re a developer, feel free to poke around, but keep in mind that no art or assets are included, so you won’t be able to compile it into a working game without a bit of hunting around. id Software has also issued updates to both games, bringing iPad and Retina support, re-mastered audio, improved frame rate, and more. id Software is one of the founding fathers of the first person shooter genre, and it’s awesome to see them continuing to support the FOSS ideology.

Neat! id Software’s parent company, ZeniMax Media, just won an important appeal for the Doom franchise in Germany. According to an official post on the Bethesda blog, Doom and Doom II have been de-listed by the Department for Media Harmful to Young Persons following some smart court action. This will undoubtedly pave the way for unedited versions of the PC games to hit the country and, hey, presumably even an App Store release or two if things swing our way. For you score keepers out there, id Software has released three games in the franchise on the US App Store so far: Doom Classic [$6.99], [$4.99], and [$6.99]. The two older games now are 16+ games which means, essentially, that they can actually be sold without substantial edits. Before, the original titles obviously couldn’t without restrictions. Anecdotally, this rating change comes on the heels of Epic Games' Gears of War 3 grabbing an 18+ rating

QuakeCon 2011 doesn’t have a whole lot in store for id Software’s mobile fans. The studio's focus is squarely sitting on the promotion of , which is hitting this fall. Even in past years the show has been more about the ‘big’ titles as opposed to the ‘small’ mobiles ones, but we thought you should check out the opening keynote from designer John Carmack anyway, which has been graciously uploaded to YouTube. Carmack speaks with a totally unique voice. Not only is the dude brilliant and articulate, he’s a visionary in the games design and technology field. What he says matters and what he does has mattered to mobile audiences in the past; we wouldn’t have, say, [$1.99] or [$1.99], if there wasn’t a John Carmack. We also wouldn’t even know what DOOM was if not for him and his team of pioneers. Anyway, here's the video: The keynote is over

id Software has tinkered with the price of DOOM Classic [$1.99] more than ten or so times since its release in mid-2009, but it hasn’t thrown in an update or tweak… until now. I’m still kinda stunned that the studio even bothered considering the age of this iteration of the shooter, but I’m also pretty jazzed about version 2.0, which adds retina support, universal support, a new menu layout, and a few “minor bug fixes.” On the other hand, it's also applied the same update pass on Wolfenstein 3D: Classic Platinum [$.99]. Wolfenstein, as I'm sure many of you noticed, has been updated several times in the past, unlike DOOM. Another bit of good news regarding these titles: both are now much cheaper. DOOM Classic’s price is now down from $6.99 to just $1.99, while Wolfenstein's is now just $.99 from $1.99. That's a total of, like, six or so dollars worth of

Last week during the QuakeCon keynote address, John Carmack pulled an iPhone 4 out of his pocket and shocked the audience by showing a demo of id Software's next game, Rage, running on the device. Set in a post-apocalyptic world, Rage will have elements of racing games and first person shooters. There's also said to be RPG elements in the game as well, making it sound similar to both the Fallout series and Borderlands. Information is still limited as the game isn't slated to launch until 2011, but either way the following demonstration is beyond impressive: We've spoken at length with John Carmack in the past, where he's mentioned potential upcoming id Software titles such as Doom 2, Quake Classic, and the rest of the id back catalog coming to the App Store. QuakeCon is going down this weekend in Dallas, Texas -- the annual celebration of everything id Software (makers of Quake and Doom, among a few other classic PC titles) features tournaments and panels on some of the hottest PC games around. But there's already been one big Apple announcement: John Carmack has demonstrated id's newest game, Rage, running at a full 60 frames per second on the iPhone. We first heard of this game at QuakeCon a couple of years ago, and Carmack has always said that making sure it ran on the Mac would be a priority, but it looks like he's delivered the goods. The demo was run on an iPhone 4, but Carmack said it worked great on the iPad as well. Carmack said the iPhone version would be out sometime this year, before the full version of Rage arrives on consoles and PC. Oh, and icing on

As you know I am the oldest of the bunch here at a young 37. I have played some of remixed titles in their glory days for sure. Either in a pizza joint or a three story arcade, it was there I cut my teeth on the classics. Have I known how addicting those were back then I could have saved up a boatload of quarters and bought myself something useful like a home console, whatever was the latest at the time. Even through college I tend to take a “study” break and play some vids. And again as a married man, with two girls, I still play these games in any form they come. Doom Classic brings the ancient, pixelated first-person shooter to the iPhone. Welcome to today's episode of Recycling Old PC Games for Fun and Profit. Our first contestant: Doom Classic, the first-person shooter that spawned a thousand imitators, several hundred ports, and one horrendous movie. Next up: Command & Conquer Red Alert, the real-time strategy classic responsible for a massive drop in global productivity. In my youth I was a tremendous fan of both games, so it stands to reason that I'd welcome them to my iPhone. However, neither is getting a permanent home. Let's start with Doom. While id Software's official port offers a pixel-perfect recreation, the game is 16 years old--and it shows. Indeed, juxtaposed with Doom Resurrection, a made-for-iPhone game with 21st century graphics, Doom Classic looks positively ancient. It plays that way, too: You can't even jump. Part of this is personal bias: I don't think FPS games

First, he provides a few tips for Doom Classic: Carmack reports that they do plan on supporting Doom Classic with further updates, but don't plan on making a Lite version. While he will be stepping back from direct iPhone development in the near future, he will put some time into working out a good touch interface for the upcoming Quake Classic for the iPhone. Meanwhile, work on an iPhone specific version of Doom 2 RPG is already underway, and if its well received, they will probably bring over Orcs & Elves as well. I think it’s safe to say that the casual gaming market is developing quite nicely on the iPhone, but with the release Doom Classic and C&C Red Alert , the platform is also starting to branch into more “serious” gaming territory. Multiplayer via "wireless Internet" is completely misleading. Actually, I know they must know better, so I'll just say it's a lie. You can't play online, which is what "internet" implies. "WiFi local multiplayer" would be honest, but they chose not to be.
I'm convinced this proves FPS controls will never be "perfect" on a touch screen. Controls are decent, not great. The accelerometer for strafing helps, but can also do harm if you shift around while playing.
That said, it still gets 5-stars for Carmack's efforts to bring Doom to iPhone. I've been wanting this since my first generation iPhone.
Also, the controls are much better than most other iPhone FPS games--I just don't think the genre and platform compliment each other.
Seriously, though, 4 iPhones and a wireless router does not constitute the "Internet".

Wow, this is cool, fun to play, though it really makes you want the iPhone to have an analog stick. Tilt to strafe works pretty well, hard to not have free look. Still haven't figured out how to rocket jump.
And I just can't get over that nagging sense of Deja vu all over again from the first FPS that gave me "afterplay" in my head.
Awesome.
Awesome!

Great port! Wish it was online multiplayer though.
Controls
Nick21013
Version: 1.0
Really good from what I've played. The controls need work though, a turn sensativity feature is much needed, it's hard to aim. But over all it's really fun, buy it!
Wow!!

I've been waiting for this to come out for months. It's everything I've hoped plus more. Awesome app!!!
The game that consumed my childhood...

Great! But needs better save/load game management
Katikari
Version: 1.0
Needs better save/load game management/settings. Love how I just played for an hour, maxing out my weapons only for my kid bro playing it right after and clicking new game, thus losing my last saved game state where I was fully maxed out ready to take on a cyberdemon or two. Ugh. Besides that, it's Doom. And we all love Doom. Now tighten up the controls a bit more and bring on Doom II.

My productivity at work just went way down.
Too sensitive...
Moomoochen
Version: 1.0
There is no way to adjest the sensitive of turning.
There is no way to dodge fireball when using the first control..
Needs update!
Awesome game

But I wish the controls had the option of sensitivity. It's a pain.

I've been waiting all year for this like every good little Doom fan, and Santa Carmack delivered. Thank you! The flaws are only minor, and probably already known, and I know more content and Internet-based multiplayer are on their way.
Update: just cleared all four episodes (and all four secret maps) on Hurt Me Plenty. Ultra-Violence, here we come!
Fantastic.

To the people that write positive reviews and then give 2 stars: fix your reviews!
Great job, id. Don't have time right now to tell you everything I love about this, just the two things I'd like to see changed. I'd like to be able to make the weapon area the "fire button," instead of the "weapon switch button" (and put weapon switch somewhere else somehow).
Also, I think one of the default control setups should have forward+backward/turn on the left, and strafe on the right. If you don't put a config on there with the forward+backward/strafe control split up, people aren't going to know you can split it up. It was easier to split in Wolfenstein, BTW. Not sure what happened there.
Why complain?

Okay, everyone complaining about controls is a moron. "Make it like Wolfenstein..." Has anyone heard of the Options menu? It has the EXACT SAME control option as Wolfenstein! And a completely new configuration! Sure, tilt now controls strafe, but I hated to use tilt to aim so I don't care, I just turn the tilt control off! Please people, give this guy some credit! He's the same guy that made Wolfenstein, don't you think he'd have all the same improvements here as in there? This guy knows what he's doing! And as for being able to make your own maps, it's coming. That feature in Wolfenstein is brand new, and he's probably been working on it for a while. Give this guy some respect! Yeah, if there is a legitimate problem, let him know or give him a suggestion of something that's cool and new, but he's well aware of the situation on controls already through Wolfenstein.

I bought on this game on 3 1/2 floppy disks, and played on my 486 33mhz, played for hours with my friends. Now I get to do it all again on my iPod. Well worth the 6.99, seeing I paid at $30 or more when I was kid.
Fantastic!!

What is truly unbelievable is, the controls actually work exceptionally well. What a breeze to play! Way to go Carmack, and id.
