Chomp’s proprietary algorithm learns the functions and topics of apps, so you can search based on what apps do, not just what they’re called. Try searching for “puzzle games”, “kids games”, “expense trackers”, “tip calculators” or “chat” and start finding great apps.
The Chomp app is currently available for iPhone and iPod Touch. For more information visit Chomp on the web at chomp.com.

TechCrunch is reporting that Apple has acquired Chomp, an App Store search engine that essentially does what Apple's built-in search bar does, only better. The details of the acquisition haven't been disclosed yet, but apparently it's a done deal and the Chomp team is already reporting to Apple. Chomp has a website and a free app that allow you to search the App Store in a number of ways, depending on what you're looking for. In Chomp's current form it can also be used to search the Android Marketplace, but that functionality will almost certainly be stripped once Apple fully takes the reins. According to TechCrunch, "Apple has bought the Chomp team and technology and plans to use both to completely revamp App Store search and recommendations." What does this mean for gaming? Potentially a lot. Better, deeper search functionality could mean more relevant results when you search for general terms

Having an App Store means never having to say "Sorry, there's no app for that" -- or at least not very often. With the massive success of the iOS App Store, however, there's also a discoverability problem: how do you find the apps you need? Searching by name or keyword doesn't always help, and some gems may be hiding just around the next page of results. The search tool Chomp, available currently for both iOS and Android, aimed to change that equation. Via the company's app or web tool, you can search for apps by what they do rather than what they're called. A proprietary algorithm digs into the app descriptions, reviews and capabilities to figure out what makes an app useful, and then exposes that analysis to eager app searchers and would-be purchasers. Such a capability, if it worked as advertised, would be very valuable. Seems like it does work

Chomp, the leading app search company, has totally redone their iOS application making it quicker to search and easier to discover new apps. The real story with this update, though, is the new discoverability features. Chomp goes beyond an app search app to provide the user with some great features to help find new apps either in pre-defined ranking groups or via groups based on an app category. Chomp powers our app search here are 148Apps. They also happen to have one great iOS app to search for and discover new apps. It lets you get recommendations from friends and ‘experts ‘ you choose to follow, and also makes it very easy and fun to add your own mini-reviews of apps. It ‘s just had an update this week, to Version 2.0.0. Here ‘s what ‘s new: Updated for iPhone 4 and iOS 4 with a completely new UI and new search functionality! - New search lets you find apps based on the type of app you’re looking for, not just app name. In its first 31 days, the company has gotten 150,000 users who have left a total of 1 million reviews. And today it’s launching Chomp Connect, a new feature that lets iPhone app developers integrate Chomp directly into their applications with a minimum amount of work. Chomp invites users to leave reviews about the apps they’re using, and also features a ‘follow’ system where you can keep tabs on what your friends or Internet celebrities

We all know the drill by now “ there are 17 zillion or so apps in the iPhone App Store and it ‘s getting harder to find good apps, apps that suit our own individual needs and wants. There are a rapidly growing number of apps and services that offer to help us out in this area “ and Chomp is one of the latest entries in the field. It ‘s also the most fun and social feeling app of this type that I ‘ve come across so far. I was lucky enough to get contacted by Chomp ‘s CEO, Ben Keighran, this week “ and as I told him I ‘m a fan of the app, I got to ask him a few questions about the app. Read on for a quick rundown of the app ‘s features, some thoughts on what makes it the most compelling ‘discovery app ‘

Last week, we previewed Chomp, a new service that aims to offer a better review and recommendation system for iPhone apps. Today, the service, which is an app itself, has gone live, with its app now available in the App Store. As we noted, the service is sort of like a Yelp for iPhone apps. But what makes it work is that it’s simple and intuitive. When you load up Chomp, you’re taken to a screen with just four main options: Live App Reviews, Recommendations, Add People, and Bookmarked Apps. As you might imagine, the Live App Reviews are is a stream of new app reviews coming in, in realtime. Recommendations give you a list of apps to download based on the apps you’ve already reviewed. Add People gives you an easy way to connect with others on the service using your real friends on Facebook, “App Celebrities” (high profile users), and

This new version makes it really easy to glance at an app and decide whether it's good or not. And I'm so glad they brought back the free apps of the day feature. Who doesn't like free apps?!

Just keeps getting better. It is a beautiful way to find and discover new apps, and I think users will really love it as a supplement to Apple's App Store. Search is top-notch and very fast. "Free apps of the day" is a great way to find bargains. I use this new version of Chomp on my iPhone almost every day.
Fantastic!

Version: 3.5
This is a great update for what is already the best App Search out there. While the search is awesome, the search suggestions are really cool! Such a simple experience now, I just search and find what I need. Star ratings have made it easier to see what everyone else thinks of each app. The Twitter integration on iOS 5 is great. I love being able to sign in to my profile by choosing my Twitter account that was already set up on my iPhone. The updated sharing options are a nice touch. 👍
