Ivanovich Games, who have previously brought the Operation Wolf-inspired gallery shooter [Free/HD] to the App Store, are at it once again with their homage to the classic arcade-style platforming game Bomb Jack, called Katana Jack. Just the news of a new Bomb Jack style game coming to the App Store is reason enough to get excited, but even more interesting to me is how Katana Jack has been developed. All of the artwork in the game was created using the excellent Brushes [$4.99/HD] app on an iPad, and the music was also composed on an iPad using GarageBand [$4.99]. Now, I absolutely love the Brushes app, but I've never personally been able to create anything with it that didn't look like I drew it by haphazardly dragging my nose around the screen. I have a ton of respect some of the amazing art people are able to make using the app,

By Rene Ritchie, Monday, May 9, 2011 | TiPb’s developer spotlights are like DVD/iTunes Extras for the App Store — a weekly look behind the scenes at the programers and designers that bring you the iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad apps and games you love. This week Rene talks with Marc Edwards of Bjango. What can we call you? Marc Edwards. What can we call your company? Bjango. Where are you situated? Melbourne, Australia. Yes, that giant, mostly empty island at the end of the earth. It’s a great place to live, provided you avoid the killer snakes, killer spiders, killer sharks and various other nasties. What apps, other than your own, do you currently use the most often? 1Password, Brushes, The Early Edition, Reeder (yes, two RSS readers) and Our Choice. There’s some obvious and potentially boring choices in there, but those are the current apps I’ve been using daily

David Hockney's art created by iPhone and iPad is currently on display at the Pierre Berge-Yves St. Laurent Foundation in Paris. When Hockney first got his iPhone a few years ago, he immediately recognized its capability to create art. Each day, Hockney paints flowers and sunsets with his device and sends those images to friends. Those paintings are now hanging in a show called "Fresh Flowers," displayed on 20 iPhones and 20 iPads. It's particularly interesting how Hockney has chosen the subjects for his art. "The fact that the screen is illuminated makes you choose luminous subjects, or at least I did," Hockney says in an interview on his own web site. "Dawn is about luminosity and so is the iPhone. People send me iPhone drawings which look OK, but you realise that they are not picking particularly luminous subjects – which this medium is rather good at [in ways that]

Want to add some social mobile fun to this Halloween? How about taking some of the snapshots you’re taking with your iPhone or iPod touch, and turning them into cartoon avatars for Facebook and Twitter? The process is easy, and all you need are a few apps. Once you have your photo, perform all of the necessary cropping and color adjustments in one of the many image editors available. For this step in the process I’ve always used Photogene (iTunes link, $1.99). Photoshop Express is a good free alternative. In Photogene, I auto adjust the colors and utilize a filter to sharpen the image. This sharpening helps out when the photo is converted into a drawing. I then crop the image, depending on what I want to use it for. If I’m creating an avatar for IM apps, I will typically use a 1:1 ration when cropping. If you just want this

I was about to embark on a three-and-a-half-hour trek home to Connecticut from Maine after a beach weekend. I had two youngsters in the back seat and, my wife and I would quickly discover, no food. But I had gadgets, and I had apps. And I was about to find out if they could mollify an 8-year-old boy, Luca, and an 11-year-old girl, Juliana, more effectively than snacks. A little preview: if you have a BlackBerry, pack lots of snacks. An Android requires fewer, and an iPhone (or, better yet, an iPad) may completely replace road food, if you choose your apps well. My general philosophy is that staring silently out the window is one of the more rewarding uses of brain power. But when that gets old, the children’s bickering gets loud and you notice that two nearby drivers are engaged in highway texting (for real), philosophy does not help.

Apple seems to be on a roll of late with App Store app lists. First came The Best Games You’ve Never Played, a roundup of hidden gems that haven’t quite burned up the app charts. Now they’ve released the Awesome iOS 4 Apps list, a collection of apps and games that have been updated to take advantage of iOS 4′s new features, like support for the Retina Display and Multitasking/Fast App Switching. Here are some notable that have made the list: Now I haven’t tried all 42 apps on the list, but I don’t think I’d consider all of them to be awesome. I suppose it’s all a matter of personal preference and interests (and of course, apps that actually have been updated for iOS 4 already). The entire Apple roundup can be found right here on iTunes.

We already spotlighted a few big apps that have made the jump to iOS 4 (and I'm sure we'll have more coming up soon), but Apple has gone ahead and put a few of its favorites on a page in iTunes for you to browse through as well. There are some excellent games on the list (PopCap didn't waste any time, and Ngmoco has a few, along with both Firemint titles). Art app Brushes and TUAW favorite Dropbox are there too, along with a bevy of other popular titles. This list definitely isn't definitive (iBooks is obviously ready for iOS 4, though it's not on there), but if you want to see what the Retina Display is like or check out multitasking on an app like Pandora, you can do so. One interesting note on what's not on there: Apple hasn't yet updated its official Remote app, and Texas Hold 'Em

Jun 9th 2010 at 7:00AM Was there a reason Apple didn't really give any "Face Time" to Mac apps this WWDC. I feel a little sad that Mac seemed to get snubbed. I would run out right now and buy an iPad if the TabToolkit allowed you to enter Notation/Tab rather then just being a viewer/playback app. Still a great app though. Mike, maybe you could recommend some of these awesome really out-of-the-way apps that we don't know about? I try every day, my friend. Fair enough Where is the award for Angry Birds? "Apple definitely didn't dig too deep to find really out-of-the-way titles." Developers submit their own apps to Apple. 20 Minute Meals was the best selling paid app in the UK for quite a while last year, and still is in the top 20 or so. It's a good app, which I've used a few times. The meals

Just because Adobe can't have Flash on the iPad doesn't mean that they want to miss out on the Apple tablet bandwagon. Adobe has released a pretty cool app called Adobe Ideas. Adobe Ideas is a sketchbook for the iPad. The app features vector-based drawing tools, zoom control, sizable brushes, layers, and the ability to email PDF documents for editing in Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop. While Adobe Ideas isn't as feature-rich as Brushes for iPad, it is a free app that starving artists will appreciate (though, if you've bought an iPad, I don't think you technically count as a "starving" artist). Brushes for iPhone was used by Jorge Colombo to paint a cover of The New Yorker. It's going to be cool to see how artists start embracing the iPad and its larger screen with apps like these. Picasso may have had his Moleskine (may have), but the next great artists

My family is originally from Ecuador, and I recently got the opportunity to go back to the land of my birth and spend a few months living there. During that time I’ve been staying with my aunt and uncle and as a result have gotten to see a lot of their grandchildren. These four precocious girls, ranging in age from five to 11, were delighted by my iPhone the first time I showed it to them and now, each time they visit, my iPhone is appropriated for a while so they can play games on it. Seeing how much they enjoyed the games I had on there, I went out and bought a bunch of additional games to give them some variety, and now have almost 40 on my iPhone, most of them aimed at a younger audience. Curious about which games they enjoyed the most, I asked each to list

Brushes is an iPhone app that puts the power of a painting application right onto your iPhone and iPod Touch. The app offers many features that a standard drawing iPhone application can't offer. Users can take advantage of the many layers that it offers and the variety of brushes that allow for very detailed and extremely textured paintings. The app utilizes the pinch zooming feature to give users the ability to add the smallest detail to their piece. The app can zoom up to 1600% which is more than enough to make sure your textures are perfect. Photos can be added to layers from your gallery and all layers can be copy and pasted between paintings. After the piece is finished, Mac users can replay the painting using a free utility offered online. If you want to store the painting somewhere other than your phone, the app has a built-in web

There are a good number of iPhone apps that are touted as having a large ‘wow factor ‘; apps that many of us like to show off to friends and non iPhone users. Many games probably fit the bill as well “ from some of the super clever physics games through to action-packed ones ported across from major gaming platforms. For a long time now though, it has been clear to me that the one single app that most clearly demonstrates the power and the possibilities of the iPhone is Brushes, the iPhone drawing / painting app. Ironically, I myself cannot draw even a stick figure in a way that would be recognizable to anyone “ I am

There are plenty of jaw-droppingly cool iPhone apps, and we’ve assembled a few of them here on JAiB today. These aren’t necessarily the apps you’ll use every day, and they might not even be your favourites, but each of these apps is almost certain to elicit a “whaaaaat, did you just do that on your iPhone?!” from anyone you show them to. Google Maps, Street view ($200 – well, I’m just referencing the price of your iPhone) Let’s start the list off nice and easy. This is something amazing that the iPhone can do by default, and I’ve used it a few times to remember the name of a restaurant I ate at, when all I knew was which street I was on. Street view on the Google Maps app is almost unreal in how easy it makes “walking” down a street from the comfort of your couch a reality. Bump

I was really curious about the Pogo Sketch iPhone stylus when I first heard about it, so when I was offered the chance to review it by the Max Borges agency, the fact that it was the “hot pink” version of the product didn’t really register. That’s okay, though, because as long as I punch a live bear in the stomach every few days and stay unshaven, I can still feel like a man despite the fact that my dainty fingers are wrapped around a $15 aluminum stylus in a (surprisingly gorgeous) hot pink. A Stylus for a capacitive screen The iPhone has a capacitive touchscreen, which means it registers taps when your body’s electrical field distorts the charge on the touchscreen. What this really means is — and what you likely know by now if you’ve tried to use an iPhone in winter — your iPhone won’t respond to anything

By – It‚Äôs amazing to notice how iPhone gives birth to a new breed of artists ‚Äì those who never miss a moment worth capturing in the photo or painting. Many professional painters, designers and photographers recognized the iPhone and iPod Touch as the new age art mediums, and have become evangelists of the iArt. What is the secret of such a great popularity? The well-known photographer Chase Jarvis formulated the answer quite well in the title of his new published book “The Best Camera Is The One That’s With You” (he only used an iPhone for this photo book). In other words, people enjoy the possibility to implement their creative ideas on the go, and to be ready when spontaneous inspiration catches them. Just add a few specialized applications to your device and get a portable art or photography studio in your pocket — so what are YOU waiting

Brushes is probably the single most popular painting application for the iPhone and, not surprisingly, we’ve seen few artists using it for their mobile creations. They (and other Brushes users) will be glad to know that it has been recently updated with spanking new features. The big news of the version 2.0 is the support for layers and a whole feature-set around them. You can have/use up to 4 layars, import multiple photos, adjust layer opacity, merge and/or reorder layers, and copy/paste them between paintings. Moreover, there’s the Enhanced Brush panel, ability to adjust paint opacity within the brush panel, enhanced zooming (up to 1600%), and so on. Finally, the updated Brushes is less buggy and more stable than the previous version, hence if you already haven’t – you should update immediately. If you want to see some of the art being done with Brushes, check out the Brushes Gallery Flickr

It’s rare for an iPhone app to make a splash out in the ‘real’ world but Brushes has. Famous for being used to paint the cover to The New Yorker magazine and a favourite of no less an Artist than David Hockney, it’s one of those rare apps to cross, at least somewhat, into the main stream. Having recently reached it’s first anniversary on the App Store and with strong competition appearing all the time, Brushes was starting to look in danger of falling behind. Now, though, version 2.0 has been released. Has it done enough to retain the iPhone Painting crown? To bring you up to speed, I’ve previously looked at PhotoForge and Layers. While I was extremely impressed with the implementation of layers (the feature) in Layers (the app), my preference for painting remained PhotoForge. Despite a couple of workflow bottlenecks, the inclusion of a smudge tool makes up

I love this app! -- This is a great little draw program, perfect for sketching and doodling and exploring color while you're waiting somewhere. It feels much more fluid to me than any of the other apps that I've used on the iPhone. In particular, the zooming is really well implemented, and the ability to pick up colors by pressing and holding is innovative and very useful. -- Thanks!

I love brushes. The only bad thing about it is that I like it so much that I've been doing brushes paintings instead of the drawing and painting with "real" media that I usually do. I'm also an experienced photoshop and corel painter user, and while brushes doesn't have all the features of those (far more expensive) programs, I'm constantly amazed at the level of variation and detail you can create with this app. If you're skeptical, browse the brushes group on Flickr, you'll see some amazing work.

This really is a great application. The interface is excellent (attractive/simple). It feels like you're using a native iPhone app and you really feel like you're really painting! The zoom, brush types/sizes, undo/redo, color variations, and eye drop tool are awesome! I really was iffy about spending the $5, but it really is on a completely different level than all the other drawing apps (free and paid). Very nice!
Love it - if you like Art Rage, you'll want this....

Brushes interface is simple and clean. Pinching zooms out and spreading zooms in up to 800%. You can choose from a wide gamut of colours and transparency that easily spans 16bits if not more and can accent each with shades of grey. From the gallery to accessing editing functions, buttons don’t fee cramped. You can move freely within and out of the painting quickly to save, export to pictures and even use a web server function which is imbedded inside to upload to your Mac. The best part? Those pictures don’t stay iPod picture resolution, but up to 1920 * 2880 pixels.

Amazing paint program!
I'd like to request a few upgrades. 1) Additional brush styles. 2) A "paintbucket fill" that fills in just a specific pixel color & not the whole painting. 3) A shadowing (3D appearance)-paintbrush texture (AKA textured brush-strokes) and/or a duel (mixed)-color paintbrush option (such as in the old Macintosh program-Painter) where the brush is loaded with two different colored paints & the colors spread & mix based on the direction the brush is moved. 4) A brush that changes thickness, etc based on its direction (caligraphy-like).
My list of wishes should not detract from how amazing this program already is! I am truely awed by its ability to duplicate the appearance of actual brush strokes & painting.
wow... this app is really cool !

After using many paint programs I think Brushes provides a means of expression unlike any other paint program on this platform. To me it displays an acrylic or oil paint style that is brilliantly executed. This is in contrast to Colors (another very good painting app) which has a watercolor like feel. The 3 brush styles in Brushes are well balanced to represent realistic brush strokes that are well designed for this small device. The zoom works wonderfully. It is so responsive you have to lift a finger when sliding the image so you don't zoom in or out too much. It's that responsive! The eye dropper works perfectly, picking up colors when I need them so I don't have to go back to the color palette. Another great addition is the Brushes Viewer to upsize your masterpiece. It is a small desktop app that also will save to quicktime movie files. Excellent! I can't say enough about how nicely and simply designed this program is. It is has a minimalist feeling and a high quality design. Well thought out. If Brushes had layers and fill shapes not just fill canvas it would be perfect. Although it is nice that you can fill the canvas with transparent tints and import a photo for reference or editing.
Astoundingly good

My first review ever. A vet of many apps and years of graphics programmes on Numerous portable devices.
This is as sweet as any, and deserves the accolades from others.

I am really impressed with this app! You can really make some great looking stuff with this program! Adjustable opacity and the quick color picker together really make this app shine! Great first release! Can't wait to see where it goes!!!
best UI of any drawing app, smooth and fast, hope netsketch steps up ui to match

after installing two other drawing apps, sketches and netsketch, i finally landed on this one. since i spend most of my time in adobe illustrator, the vector drawing capabilities of netsketch were appealing, but the interface needs a lot of work to compare to this app.
Impressive

I thought looked like nothing special, or gimmicky at best, but it's pretty amazing. I'm an art student, but illustration is my weakest point, so some of the other apps didn't seem to appealing. This one feels very natural and you can make pretty incredible pictures with it.

Lots of fun, even for a non-artist like myself. The hold-and-choose color picker and unlimited undos make it easy to quickly experiment with and correct paintings. The new web gallery and OS X viewer app add a lot of value and let you export beautiful, high-res copies of your paintings. Plus, there's a great community of artists sharing their paintings and watch-me-draw videos that serve as inspiration to the otherwise artistically challenged.
Amazing

This app is awesome. WTF are you talking about? The interface is perfect. It's like second nature. It's amazing what you can put together with this. Now I want to get a tablet and start doing CG. I just hope that the full scale paint programs live up to the intuitivness of Brushes. I love picking up colors on the fly. Which brings me to my only complaint, there is no reason for a dropper icon since you can grab a color just by touching that spot in your painting. You can hold your finger on the painting and the dropper automatically shows up. So please ditch the dropper icon and add a quick way to change opicity from the main work screen. Anyway. I love it.
Edit: this app is frackin awesome. The new update rules!!!
Up the price yo!
Nice!

Playaa93, you can indeed make paintings of that quality with brushes. Why don't you actually BUY the program and find out? You clearly haven't used it.
Great but only for Mac users

This is a great app for artists and I realy like it BUT there is something that is a bit missleading in this add. It says you can save out your brushes paintings to your computer at much larger scale. However unless your computer is a Mac it will not export anything larger than a thumbnail size. Change this feature to include Windows based systems and this will be the best app I have downloaded. I want to use this app in my work but simply can not. If I had knownof this limitation I would not have purchased it. Fix it and my rating goes to an easy 5.

The title says it all; a fantastically solid paint program.
I would love to see the accelerometer used to control opacity (and if it provides more than one dimension of data, brush size) - enabled only by a significant degree of tilt so as to prevent accidental adjustments.
Best paint app!! New version lets you export poster size for print!!!

I tried several free paint apps and did a lot of research on paid apps, before deciding on Brushes and I am certain I made a good decision. If you want to have any detail in your paintings, you'll need one of the paid apps. The free versions are lacking in either zoom, opacity settings or the ability to undo. Brushes has excellent implementation of all of these features and more.
Improbably Perfect

It doesn't have the most features, it doesn't have really fancy bells & whistles, but this is the only drawing app I actually find myself using. I've used many free & paid-for drawing apps, and I can't really explain it, but for some reason these guys nailed the interface. Maybe it's that it's so simple, it gets out of the way of actually painting. I tried the others, but I just never found myself using them. It may not seem like it's great shakes from the description, but trust me, it shines.
My Favorite Art App as of 10-15-08

I've tried both Colors and Brushes, and while both are nice painting applications, I prefer Brushes at this point. One stand out feature in Brushes is that you can use a photo from the Camera or Photo Album, which is great for importing sketches or painting over photos.
Compared to Colors!

So I have been painting with both Brushes and Colors! now for a few days as a break from work, I spend my workday painting in both photoshop and painter. Here is what I have noticed about the 2 apps.
