Does complaining to AT&T do anything?

Text message from AT&T. Several months ago I downloaded the AT&T iPhone app Mark the Spot, which has now been updated to version 2.0. Cell phone service isn't too bad in my New York apartment, but every time I had a dropped call, I'd fire up the app and register my complaint. Now, the area where I live is in one of the denser residential areas in the city, so I don't think I was alone in registering my complaints. But just a couple of days ago, I received a text message from AT&T telling me that the company had just added a new cell site in my area to "boost coverage." No, I don't live exactly in the area AT&T was describing (I would never live in any of the Trump dude's properties the message refers to). However, I was within about 10 blocks, which is close enough, I guess. Read More
AT&T says New York City service is improved
Mini_discussion_bubble TUAW - The Unofficial Apple Weblog - Posted Wed, 30 Jun 2010 22:30:00 UTC +00:00
While AT&T's service has been notoriously bad even before the iPhone launch, iPhone users in New York City have suffered some of the worst of it, with one Apple Genius reportedly saying that 30% dropped call rate was average. (I think he misspelled "atrocious.") The good news is that AT&T has rolled out a network upgrade in the NYC, according to the company's press release this week. The big question was: Will it actually help? Early anecdotal reports are that yes, it has made a big difference. I've seen various snippets around the web of people posting that things seem to be better. I guess only time will tell for sure. This also seems like a good time to remind you about AT&T's free Mark The Spot app for noting when you have either a voice or data issue. We've noted that some users are getting updated with news of tower Read More

It’s not like iPhone users are the only folks on the AT&T network, so the carrier’s voice and data issues aren’t limited to just those smartphone users. Android is all up in that business now with the Backflip and HTC Aria on AT&T’s network, so it’s only fair that those customers get to bitch about the crappy coverage and dropped calls with Mark the Spot, too. AT&T has recently started taking the cries of iPhone users seriously and boosted its network in areas where it was reportedly bad with the Mark the Spot app. Android users, you can join in the cacophony, too. The app works just like the one on the iPhone. When you run into an area where there is bad coverage, no data, failed or dropped calls, you report it to AT&T via the application. The carrier has been gathering this location-specific information and improving coverage and performance Read More

AT&T Mark The Spot Is Actually Serving A Purpose
Mini_discussion_bubble Apple iPhone Apps - Posted Tue, 18 May 2010 22:40:11 UTC +00:00
iPhone users with poor AT&T coverage have been reporting their GPS-tagged locations and hoping for some sort of improvement ever since the company first released their coverage feedback app, AT&T Mark the Spot, in early December 2009.  Hoping is the key word here, as many users have seen little to no improvement over the last six months, but it looks as if there may be some light at the end of the tunnel! According to a few TUAW readers, AT&T is sending out free text messages indicating that coverage help is on the way thanks to your feedback.  Below is an example of one of the messages: AT&T Free Msg: AT&T appreciates your Mark the Spot feedback from Nevada City CA on 12/24/2009. We are pleased to inform you that we have a new cell site planned near your submission in the next 60-90 days. If you have any further comments Read More
Mark the Spot app delivering results for low-coverage iPhone users

Back at the end of 2009 when AT&T introduced its Mark the Spot app, some were skeptical that the location-aware self-reporting tool for coverage issues and dropped calls was anything more than a sop tossed to irked iPhone owners in the interest of better PR for the cell carrier. Still, like the 'close door' button in a high-rise elevator, any opportunity for feedback or a sense of control is eagerly seized upon by us crazy hairless primates, and the presumed database of GPS-tagged trouble spots has been accumulating. Where, however, are the improvements? The new towers? The carefully tweaked coverage maps? Is this thing even on? Apparently, it is. We've gotten a few reports from readers who say that they've received surprise free texts from AT&T, telling them about network improvements directly linked to their feedback on poor coverage. The message is as follows... AT&T Free Msg: AT&T appreciates your Mark Read More
Desert Island Apps – Number 10, with Brian Bothwell
Mini_discussion_bubble iSource - Posted Sat, 27 Mar 2010 14:52:16 UTC +00:00
Today we ‘re continuing our series called Desert Island Apps.  It ‘s based on a very long-running and brilliant BBC Radio show called ‘Desert Island Discs ‘.  The premise of Desert Island Discs is simple and wonderful “ a guest is invited to choose the eight musical pieces (originally records) they would take with them if they were stranded on a desert island. In our case of course we ‘re not interested in our guests ‘ choice of music.  What we want to know is which six iPhone apps they would take with them if stranded on an island. In the past we’ve left the field wide open on this, and even let guests assume they’ve got WiFi and full connectivity on their island.  This time round the stakes are raised – as our guest has decided he wants to inaugurate the ‘Hardcore‘ version of Desert Island Apps, as you’ll Read More

FCC wants to know your mobile broadband speed
Mini_discussion_bubble TUAW - The Unofficial Apple Weblog - Posted Mon, 15 Mar 2010 21:30:00 UTC +00:00
You may remember that Verizon started running ads a while ago showing AT&T's anemic 3G coverage map. AT&T responded by saying "Our coverage includes 97% of the country!" In the small print on Verizon's ads they make it clear that AT&T does have coverage outside of 3G. In the small print on AT&T's ads they make it clear 3G isn't available everywhere. What kind of difference does 3G really make? For American wireless users, the FCC is interested in knowing how fast your mobile broadband really is. The agency has released a free iPhone app, made by Ookla, who also made the free Speedtest.net Speed Test app for iPhone (there is also an Android version). In case you're concerned about your personal information ending up in the servers of the Feds, note the app disclaimer: "Results may be pooled to analyze the quality and coverage of mobile broadband connections across the Read More

EnvIO Networks has just released the latest batch of usage statistics from its iPhone app Chorus. The app, which launched in November, acts as a social network for Apple's App Store. It lets users share what apps they're buying, as well as recommend purchases to others--two things Apple's own store does not offer. According to the company, Chorus users have invited an average of 75 friends. The numbers below are based on "tens of thousands of user interactions and download attempts" from the month of December. Rating: 7 out of 10Pros: AT&T is actually taking some steps to improve network quality by giving customers the opportunity to give immediate feedback about dropped and failed calls as well as loss of data connection.Cons: The fact that AT&T needs it’s customers to give feedback on poor network reliability.Overall: With all the complaining we do as AT&T customers about network quality it’s nice to see a company actually TRY and get information to improve the user experience.  A lot of companies just go about their business and say “We are working on it” You can download Mark the Spot from AT&T for free in the App store by clicking here. iPhone To Blame For AT&T’s Network Woes?
Mini_discussion_bubble Mac|Life - Posted Mon, 14 Dec 2009 14:45:58 UTC +00:00
Posted 12/14/2009 at 6:45am | by J.R. Bookwalter Super-stardom isn’t all it’s cracked up to be, as Apple has discovered with its immensely popular iPhone since it debuted in 2007. If it’s not the target of ill-gotten patent lawsuits, it’s taking heat for just about everything else. Now, a New York Times article is suggesting that the device is responsible for all of AT&T’s problems as well. The piece in Sunday’s New York Times suggests that the iPhone is the cause of many of AT&T’s network failures, this despite the fact that AT&T recently fell dead last in Consumer Reports’ annual cell phone satisfaction survey, according to MacRumors. Writer Randall Stross even goes so far as to claim that independent data suggests that AT&T may have “the superior network nationwide.” Be that as it may, AT&T has yet to publicly lay any blame on the iPhone, which has been a huge Read More
New AT&T App Reports Dropped Calls
Mini_discussion_bubble NYTimes Gadgetwise Blog - Posted Thu, 10 Dec 2009 17:58:20 UTC +00:00
Owners of iPhones have turned complaining about the AT&T network into an art form. In the past, AT&T has countered that its service is just fine, but the perception is pervasive — AT&T scored last in a Consumer Reports reader survey, coming in behind Verizon, T-Mobile and Sprint. Now AT&T is confronting the problem head-on, offering a free iPhone app called “Mark the Spot,” which lets iPhone owners alert AT&T to network problems, even when they don’t have a connection — which is the point, after all. When you lose a call, you click Mark the Spot, which uses GPS to log your location (or mark a different location by clicking the “map” button). Then pick from a menu of problems like, “dropped call,” “failed call,” or “poor voice quality.” Then, click a button indicating the frequency of the problem, from “once” to “always.” Finally, there is a text box where Read More
Ähnlich vielversprechend kündigt sich Read More

AT&T’s New iPhone App Lets You Complain About AT&T
Mini_discussion_bubble Mashable - Posted Tue, 08 Dec 2009 06:41:04 UTC +00:00
by Now the U.S.’s second largest wireless provider is looking to turn things around, hopefully before it loses iPhone exclusivity rights. Its newest strategy is especially unique, though, because it comes in the form of an iPhone app called Mark the Spot [iTunes Link]. The free customer service app is really quite simple. Whenever you experience a problem with your service (e.g. a dropped call, bad 3G connection, poor quality), you can open up the app and report the issue right where you are. Once you cite the problem and add additional info, it gets submitted to AT&T’s customer support team. The key to the app is that it’s location-based, meaning that AT&T can aggregate this data to find dead spots and trouble areas. This app is simple but smart — it provides useful data to AT&T while giving customers an outlet for venting about their hatred for AT&T and how Read More

Mark the Spot Lets You Tell AT&T Exactly Where Your iPhone Crapped Out [Downloads]
Mini_discussion_bubble Lifehacker - Posted Mon, 07 Dec 2009 21:00:00 UTC +00:00
iPhone: Say what you will about the iPhone as a device, but if there's one consistent weak spot for U.S. users (particularly in cities like New York), it's AT&T's service—specifically frequent dropped calls. Mark the Spot quickly reports your problems. The app is a breeze to use. Whenever you experience a dropped call, failed call, lack of coverage, data failure, or poor voice quality, just fire up the app, select the problem and frequency with which you experience it, and submit your report. The app uses your phone's location awareness to let AT&T know where their service went afoul. You can also attach a note if you're feeling really generous. In a perfect world you'd never need to worry about reporting problems, but it's nice to know it's an option. Mark the Spot is a free download, iPhone only. Read More
New AT&T App 'Mark The Spot' Aims to Find Network Problems
Mini_discussion_bubble ModMyi.com - Posted Mon, 07 Dec 2009 20:56:10 UTC +00:00
AT&T has released a new iPhone application on Monday, that aims to help find and correct Network problems. This comes as no surprise with all the recent struggles between AT&T and Verizon, arguing over who has the best coverage. We've all seen the commercials and the maps, and now it's our turn to have an input on what type of coverage we are getting. AT&T's latest FREE iPhone app, Mark the Spot, allows AT&T users to report problems with the network such as dropped calls, failed calls, no coverage, data failure, and poor voice quality . Using the built in GPS in your iPhone, it will then send a report to AT&T and provide a text message confirming a successful report. AT&T has listed the following features for its new software: What do you think? Market Ploy, or real Improvement Strategy? This morning, I'd noticed for the first time since I'd Read More

AT&T Releases Mark the Spot App to Report Network Troubles
Mini_discussion_bubble iPhone Alley - Posted Mon, 07 Dec 2009 18:39:05 UTC +00:00
If AT&T’s network has quit on you when you needed it most, there may be some good news on the horizon. AT&T on Monday released Mark the Spot [App Store, free], a free application that allows users to report problems with AT&T’s network in the same way that crashes are reported in Windows or Mac OS X. Just mark where you encountered your problem on a map, select the type of problem and how frequently you encounter that problem, and type in as many details as you wish. While it’s hard to say if AT&T is paying any attention to these reports, users can also call the company’s Customer Care line (dial 611) to hopefully talk to someone over on that end.  Mark the Spot requires iPhone OS 3.0 or later. AT&T offers app so you can report crappy service. Huh?

In one of life's supreme ironies, AT&T today posted an iPhone app that allows you to report substandard service. That's right folks. Got a dropped call? No reception? AT&T Marks the Spot [iTunes link] is designed to get that info to your favorite cell company so they can act on it. Let's see... I don't have any reception, so I pull out my new AT&T app to notify them of the problem. Doh! No reception to do that. And the app even nicely brings up a GPS map showing where I am. The GPS signal is much more reliable of course. Look, I know AT&T means well, but the app is a tacit admission that all is not well on the AT&T network. I know you could travel to someplace with good reception, and send the data to them, but I think this app will rub salt in an already sensitive Read More
AT&T Releases “Mark the Spot” iPhone App for Network Quality Feedback

AT&T’s Mark The Spot app; its about you helping AT&T find issues
Mini_discussion_bubble iPhoneFreak - Posted Mon, 07 Dec 2009 10:19:20 UTC +00:00
Over the weekend we saw another AT&T app become available in the App Store, and I have to say this one is a little surprising. To begin with, the app is called Mark The Spot and is a free download. As to what the app does, that it pretty simple, it will allow you (the user) to “provide feedback on network user experience.” But really what it does is give you a new way to complain of dropped calls, failed calls, data failure, poor voice quality and even no coverage areas. The app has pre-set buttons that allow you to choose the issue, mark your current location and then determine whether it happened once or more often. Of course, it is all topped off with a submit button. Finally, users will also get an SMS message in return to show that the message was received by AT&T. To me this shows Read More

As title suggest, Ease is beyond belief. I love how you may move your (X) around to pinpoint your location especially since you can't send at the time of issue, you are able to try again later. The best part of this app is the idea that it was released by/for AT&T and intended to find problem areas so that they may be addressed. Awesome. I love AT&T. No network is perfect, but my customer service has always been top notch and that is what keeps me around. This app is another effort on their part to keep us (non-jailbroken iPhone customers) satisfied. Thanks guys. When I get out of the Army, I'm coming for a job. I want to work for a customer oriented company and you guys not only set, but exceed the standard. As always, I will thank you again when it's time to pay my bill.
